Walking through the door we were embraced by the most amazing fragrance of spice, a clean bright colorful space, and a gracious and friendly hostess. We ordered off the glorious menu. So many familiar Indian dishes, even some Chinese dishes, and so many new Nepalese names that I can’t wait to try. And Momos! Vegetable, chicken, goat, and all prepared in one of five ways. We started with a large plate of vegetable pakoras, which were the best I’ve ever had! Big chunks of juicy vegetables, a thicker batter, and so much flavor. We had a vegetable dish prepared without dairy at my request, brown rice, and Jhol goat momos. Jhol is a kind of soup. The servings were so generous that we brought a lot of food home. Everything was prepared fresh, wonderfully spiced, and was utterly delicious. I agree with other reviewers that Lotus has some serious competition. And I can’t wait to eat there again.
Update: We went back for another lunch. They now have a lunch special, a Nepali thali plate, a lovely tray with multiple dishes surrounding a mound of saffron rice topped with a papadum. It was delicious, and a very generous amount of wonderfully prepared food. This is now our favorite place for Indian food and related cuisines. Everything about eating there...
Read moreThis is a fabulous Nepalese restaurant and such a great new addition to the restaurant scene in downtown San Rafael. This was our second visit - we tried the momo dumplings this time, which were delicious. My son ordered the steamed chicken dumplings and let me try one - and then two more of them! They were spiced just right with a nice gingery finish. The rest of the food on the menu is Nepalese but very similar to Indian food, and possibly better! I ordered the vegetarian thali - a mixture of veggie dishes, with the alu gobi, spinach paneer, and Dahl tarka being my favourites. My husband ordered the tandoori chicken tikka and my other son ordered the tandoori fish tikka. Their tandoor dishes were perfectly cooked and hands down the best tandoori I’ve had anywhere. The mango lassi was very good. The gulab jamuns were served warm with the rose syrup going all the way through the balls (sometimes they can be rock hard in the center but these were done perfectly). The candied fennel seed at the entrance as we walked out at the end was a very refreshing touch. The entire meal was well cooked, delicious but not overly rich. This is a family-run restaurant with exceptionally...
Read moreWe greatly enjoyed a dinner at this restaurant. We like Indian food, and that is what we ordered, although I thought it might be a Nepalese Restaurant because of the Mount Everest themed decor. We were on our way to see a play and in a bit of a hurry, but they were understanding and we were able to get our food relatively quickly. We learned that they also had a lunch buffet and so we came a second time to try that on our 35th wedding anniversary, in fact. We were not disappointed. There was a wide variety to choose from and they also brought us delicious fresh, hot naan. It was very filling and included salads, dessert, appetizers including vegetable pakoras, papadam. They were also very kind and generous, offering us a celebratory glass of wine (which we declined, but it was a sweet gesture.) I was amazed to find out that it was relatively new. We also are new to Marin County, but will probably try to return to Everest when the opportunity arises. It was a great find and I hope the restaurant thrives and...
