Santa Fe doesn't boast a tremendous collection of affordable and good-tasting pizza joints; especially on the south side part of town. To make things worse, options become even more scarce if you're looking to stray away from calorie excessive pies of the fast-food variety. However, there is at least one good alternative located near the South Side Cafe and Regal 14 Cinema; that, of course, being Pizza Centro. This place has been around for at least a few good years now and has certainly established itself as a reputable pizza joint. Things couldn't have gone more ideally during my latest visit. I called ahead and placed an order for a simple 12" cheese pizza. The guy on the other line said it wouldn't take more than twenty minutes to prepare and true to his word, that was indeed the case. I walked in and proceed right up the register just as there were setting aside my freshly baked order. For what I got, it was just a little north of twelve dollars; which isn't that bad all things considered. I went home and devoured the entire things in no time at all. While Pizza Centro is one of the better and more consistent pizza places in town. One thing that they've always struggled with has been controlling the grease content of their pies. I usually have to lay down a few napkins atop the pizza in order to absorb the excess oil. Something I could live without doing. Apart from that, however, I'm usually happy with my experiences at Pizza Centro as it is a great addition to Santa Fe's rather lackluster south side...
Read moreI am not sure if the management has changed but pizza centro used to be my go-to pizza spot in Santa Fe. However, the last several times I have visited the toppings are piled on to the pizza, the crust is thinner and the center of the pizza is uncooked/ raw. This leads to the pizza falling apart as you try to eat it. The first bite; toppings are falling over and the pizza caves in on itself. Second bite; the dough is raw and uncooked. Third bite; I am now eating a pile of cheese and cooked meats with a fork. This is sad because I used to really love going to this place. I am sure I will give it another chance in a few months but for now I will probably look for another pizzeria when I...
Read moreFinally done with this place after too many tries. It's ostensibly a New York Style pizza place but it tramples the first rule of NY pizza: have pizza slices available at all times. On the contrary, they CLAIM (when you talk to them) to have slices available at lunch time but even then it is often not the case - as for example at 12:45 today. And to call the staff lackadaisical would be an understatement.
It's too bad because if you're willing to pony up for a whole pie or happen to get there on one of the rare occasions when they do have slices it's pretty good stuff in a city that otherwise has no NY-style pizza options. A very poorly-run business that could be...
