Sonny's BBQ — Restaurant in Sarasota

We'll never go here again. The food was great, but the server was dangerously bad, and argued with my entire family.

My daughter has Type 1 Diabetes. So when we order her a sugar free drink, it's not a diet thing, it's a medical thing.

The sugar filled lemonade my daughter was given, caused her to blood sugar to spike moments after she took a few sips.

Unacceptable. We had to bolus her before we had even ordered food (which is bad for those new to the t1d world.)

Our server, David, was the real obstacle.

He seemed to work the bar, our table, and several other tables at the same time, and was clearly in the weeds. I get that, I've been there, but that's not an excuse.

This dude not only gives my kid the wrong drink. He gets a bunch of the food orders wrong, then argues with my family about it and starts changing the ticket prices to whatever was higher priced.

Specifics: When all the food was ordered, I hear my sister and mom in law order loaded tots with pulled pork and ask for it to come out with dinner. It comes out way before dinner, without pulled pork, and an argument takes place between David and my family about timing, what was ordered, and ends with "I'll just change the ticket". My other sister, orders the $10 combo thing, gets brought something else, and is also upcharged for a mistake she didn't make. Again, "I'll just change the ticket" We have to ask multiple times to get all of the sides By the end of the meal, after dropping off the tickets, David never comes back so we figure we pay up front. We get up front and everyone's confused why we didn't pay at the table. They have to flag David down who is busy cleaning and breaking down the bar.

We've had great dining experiences in Sarasota until last night.

Chain bbq restaurant i decided to try.

For appetizers , I decided to try three different things the smoked wings, the pulled pork eggrolls, and lastly , the fried okra,

The smoked wings came out fresh and hot taste delicious, only problem is they were super tough. Skin texture was like biting through rubber .

The pulled pork egg rolls were ok but didn’t have any filling in them. Tasted like I was just eating warm coleslaw..

Fried Okra was fresh and delicious. I’m a person who loves fried Okra and this I recommend if you like okra as well.

*Just to note they do have their own bbq sauces… but they all kind of taste the same… could just be me. Idk

For my Entree I got the Sonny Samples which had the Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, 1/4 BBQ Chicken and Sweet & Smokey Ribs.

Pulled pork was “ok” at best,

the brisket didn’t have much flavor. it was thick cut and kind of dry with little flavor. I was hoping for moist, seasoned to perfection, like most brisket I have had

Ribs were ok, fall off the bone with the wood smoke flavor.

The chicken was smoke and cooked well but didn’t have flavor. I know it’s smoked but they can add some seasoning, salt/ pepper on this. Skin was also tough like the smoked wings . I think it’s the way they smoke there wings that makes the skin come out tough.

Baked beans were okay. They were both sweet and sour. Not the worse but not the best.

I got tater tot’s , came out good and fresh

And lastly the Corn bread. It s was good, tastes like jiffy cornbread mix, but I could be wrong. Too of the cornbread was buttered well and sweet, which gave it that solid texture.

Overall it was ok. I liked the smoke wings a lot just wish they were not tough to bite through

Yesterday 10/17 I ordered a steak burger for my friend and I. My friend was so excited to try Sonny’s burger because I always recommend to her. Well, we ordered two steak burgers and scheduled to be delivered at 11:45am. We waited and the delivery person showed up around 12pm and that was totally fine until I noticed she brought me the wrong bag and everything was missing. I told the delivery person this bag isn’t mine so I could Sonny’s and asked them if they knew about it, Sonny’s said that my order was still there. The delivery person went back to Sonny’s and this time picked up the correct order. We waited another 50 minutes to get our lunch. When we opened up the steak burger did not come with lettuce, tomate and sauces as it was showing on their website. I called Sonny’s and the rude lady that works there said that I had to add that but when placing the order there was not option to add that. I asked for a discount or refund she said for me to call DoorDash. I called DoorDash and they said they were giving me a refund since the order was almost one hour and thirty minutes late.

Today 10/18 I called DoorDash to verify the refund status and they said to contact Sonny’s. When I called Sonny’s, the same rude lady answered the phone and she wasn’t letting me talk and explain the situation then she hanged up the phone. I feel bad that Sonny’s has this attitude with their customers. I used to eat there a lot but now I’m rethinking my actions.
