I first visited Fred's back in July when family came to town and had a pleasant experience. When some close friends visited this past weekend I figured I take them there for brunch before a motorcycle ride to the coast. This was a HUGE MISTAKE. From the very beginning the lady was very rude and short with us. Told us we had to keep our mask on inside unless we had food in front of us. She proceeded to explain that if we sat outside the masks where not required. We opted to sit outside. After about a 10 minute wait (and multiple servers walking by) I finally had to ask for a server and we got the same lady. She was once again very rude and very short and flat said "what do you want to eat". Typically you begin with asking if we would like any beverages. Then she stopped taking our drink orders and told us we had to put on masks when we order. This is after she told us we did not need to wear masks outside. Reluctantly we put our food and drink order in. The drinks came out quickly followed by the food. I ordered a omelet with egg whites. I could tell as soon as he put my plate down that the eggs were watery and not cooked properly. I sent it back. A few minutes later it came out more done on the inside but once again still watery on the inside. I sent the food back and just asked to have it removed from our bill. I spoke to the owner, I am guessing his name is Fred but he would not give it to me. I explained how horrible our service was and that you need to be clear with your customers on their expectations regarding masks. There were no signs outside indicating their mask policy. He became very confrontational and suggested we were being rude. Then I tried to discuss what was wrong with my food and he did not care to listen. Needless to say I will not be going back there. I am huge advocate of supporting small businesses and I will take my money and my friends elsewhere. I suggest you do the same. Absolutely horrible experience. Thankful a nice motorcycle ride to the coast and great weather still made for...
Read moreI’m really pretty disappointed — not in FRED’s,mind you — but in myself. In my third trip to San Francisco within the last several months it wasn’t until the end of the third trip that I left a review for this 8th wonder of the world??! Google should revoke my status as a Local Guide for this (totally kidding don’t do that, Google!!).
I’m a big fan of hyperbole and superfluous adjectives that far exceed simple exaggeration. I toss all of that aside to tell you that this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had. It isn’t a fluke because I’ve been here over a half dozen times. I routinely split with my wife: the Avocado Omelette with sausage with the hash browns upgraded to FRED’s hash (ONLY AVAILABLE M-F; it’s a griddle real estate issue; completely reasonable IMHO), and an order of Fat Fred’s (deep fried French toast). I have legitimately never had a breakfast this good anywhere or at any time in my life. Curious readers may be wondering: what about the Millionaire’s Bacon (copyright)? Well, it’s here and it’s amazing. I just usually get too full and, well, I’m not a millionaire so it’s a bad habit for me to routinely pick this up, but FRED’s first-timers, you owe it to yourself to splurge on this master of all bacons. Then come back and like this review because you realize you are a better human for eating this majesty.
Everything else here is above and beyond: service, atmosphere (very dive-y), and (in my opinion) value. FRED’s isn’t cheap, so don’t read that here, but when I say value, understand that quality ingredients and excellent preparation techniques matter to me, so cost weighed against those things together with quantity of food?
Best breakfast...
Read moreWe came around 11 on a Sunday. The place is located farther from the center, so the area is not particularly crowded. There is a small parking belonging to the place as well as free street parking on the street.
The place has tables inside and outside. Outside is way better indeed - fresh air and not so crowded, inside is a rather packed. The place has a toilet but be ready for a queue.
First we had to wait in the queue to be seated for around 30 minutes. One has to register their name in the book for queuing which is not obvious.
When seated we knew what to order and made the order directly: a fried egg with sausage and an omelette, 2 fresh juices. The food arrived in 15-20 minutes. However, they mixed up our order and brought a wrong platter. It took them some time to change it. Next when we were eating, we found a large bug in the omelette. The waiter was polite and helpful offered to cancel the order or change it. We asked to change our order, the new omelette although without anything else on the plate came shortly.
All in all the place is fine, but juicy bug in the food was very disappointing. The food looked fine but didn’t taste particularly great: egg was not cooked till the degree we asked, potato tasted bitter oil. The prices are rather high, for two drinks and egg platters we paid totally...
