I was having a craving for a chicken salad sandwich at lunchtime today and remembered there was a new sandwich place next to Safeway at Scottsdale Rd and Shea, so I stopped in on my way to (half day) school pickup. I ordered a half a Big Easy on sourdough, as it comes. There was only one person ahead of me in line to order, but once I ordered I noticed that almost no one waiting, standing or sitting at tables, had their food yet. It took 20 minutes for my sub to be ready.
While I waited, these were things I noticed: there were five people dedicated to making sandwiches, another person to put orders in the bags, and one to work the register. For so many workers, I was surprised at how slow the sandwiches came out. There were a lot of online orders ready and waiting but I watched those get put up too, and they were not added to the shelves any faster than the counter orders. The wait was so long, a few people on lunch breaks were definitely getting stressed and one guy finally asked for a refund and left. There was also a manager/owner onsite, as he came out to help with the refund. Overall, everyone was nice, and I didn't get frustrated, but I had to wait so long, I had to take my sub with me to eat at home after I picked up the kids.
Once home and settled, I was excited to try it. However, they made the wrong sandwich. Instead of chicken salad, they made it with turkey. I am pretty sure it was not a mix-up with someone else's, as I'm the only half sandwich I heard ordered, and was able to watch the sandwiches around me placed in bags. They were all full sized, including the guy after me, because he was very concerned with time and checked in on his order numerous times to know his placement in the finished/bagged line. (They line the bags up on the counter with ticket attached, as they're waiting for the sandwich to come up.)
I am pretty sure they simply made the sandwich wrong. I actually think this is a bigger mistake, as it means the employee who made mine doesn't know which sub name is which. They had to have thought the Big Easy was turkey. My ticket is correct, but the sandwich is the wrong one. Tbh, I'm not even sure what he thought he was making. Not one of the listed subs matches. It has avocado but not bacon, so it wasn't exactly like either Listen Linda or Tom Turkey, their other two turkey subs. It did taste pretty good, a little bland and very messy, but I honestly don't know exactly what all was on it for sauces and stuff. Not what I paid for and was expecting but an okay sub.
If I had ordered it, I would probably rate it 7.5/10 overall. But if I'm rating it on the Big Easy, as is described, it was obviously a complete fail.
Maybe I'll give them another try outside of the lunch rush time. But if so, I will DEFINITELY confirm that I actually got what I ordered BEFORE leaving the shop even if I end up in a hurry by the end.
Lastly, the Dirty brand Funky Fusion chips they carry were delish! And they do add in a small chocolate chip cookie, which is a nice touch. It was just okay though, kinda like an Otis Spunkmeyer if my memory of them holds true.
I'd say give them a try if/when you have plenty of time, but be sure to double-check your order if...
Read morePROS: Dutch crunch roll and sourdough breads were terrific. Fresh baked and took the sandwiches to a whole new level. The quantity and quality of the ingredients (with the exception of the pickles) were better than any other establishment out there. The macaroni and potato salads are good. Potato salad is something I would get here again. The place was clean and the staff were friendly. The 2 complementary chocolate chip cookies we got were delicious and I would buy them if we went back. CONS: We purchased one of the hot and one of the cold sandwiches with some customizations that were available on the app. We went at around 2 to avoid a lunch rush. We were disappointed when the only customization that was honored was the "no mustard". Both sandwiches had pepperoncini, only 2 pickles and despite paying for the addition of cranberry sauce on the Big Jake, it was not included. We had to return to the establishment to get our potato and macaroni salads after we got about 10 minutes down the road and realized they were missing. That wasn't the only reason for our return. We also went back to pay for another ½ Big Jake when we saw they had given us a whole sandwich instead of the ½ that was ordered. Although the salads were both good, the macaroni is no different than you could get at any supermarket and get more of for the same price or less. Both were far overpriced for the amount you receive. FINAL THOUGHTS: If you're in the area and have a choice between this shop and a competitor I'd say come here, just check your order carefully before leaving. Go with the potato salad and cookies but go to the supermarket next door if you want the macaroni salad. Not worth the out of the way...
Read moreI was on the hunt for a new place to grab a sandwich that may be different than the others. I would see Mr. Pickle’s every time I go to Safeway here in the same plaza and finally decided to give it a try. I’m happy I did! There are so many more options than your typical sandwich shop with a variety of cheeses, meats, add ons, chips, breads or wraps. Endless customizable options! They even have cream cheese! The double crunch roll was my favorite and the sandwich was so tasty! I had only planned on eating half but ended up eating the whole thing! lol The free cookie included with the sandwich was a great touch! I ordered online and it was ready as soon as I showed up a few minutes later! I treated a friend to a sandwich as well, and he agreed with two thumbs up since he doesn’t speak with his mouth full. lol I can’t wait for my next lunch from here! Excellent!...
