It's hard to leave a negative review for such a Ballard staple, but it was harder to have the experience that we had after coming here so many other times. My husband and I came in with another couple after attending a concert at Tractor Tavern. When we were seated inside at a booth, we were probably 1 of only 4 or 5 tables with guests both inside and outside. My husband ordered a beer while the rest of us ordered non-alcoholic beverages. A few minutes later, before any of our drinks had been delivered or the rest of our orders taken, a man walked past our booth hurriedly and muttered almost inaudibly, "no alcohol for you", patted his hands on our table and continued walking past us. We all looked at our phones / watches, it was only 11:00 pm, but we assumed that meant they stopped serving alcohol at 11:00 pm. We thought that the message was delivered in an extremely rude way and that it was strange that our waitress didn't tell us herself that they were no longer serving alcohol when my husband ordered a beer, but we just continued chatting at our table and moved on. Some more time passed and my husband noticed that someone sitting at the bar had just been served a beer - at least 15-20 minutes after we thought we had been told they were no longer serving alcohol. When our waitress came back to the table, my husband asked her why he wasn't being served if they were still clearly serving beer. We were then told that "someone" working at the restaurant "saw" my husband "walk into the women's restroom" so the staff decided that my husband was too drunk to continue being served alcohol. Not only was the delivery of this message so poor, but my husband had not gotten up from the table one time since we were seated!!! They wouldn't tell us who from the restaurant saw this happen or when and when I asked the VERY OBVIOUS question of why they had just assumed that the person entering the women's restaurant was some overserved drunk dude instead of potentially someone who was non-binary or trans, the waitress just looked at me blankly, apologized for the way the message had been delivered to us and walked away. Ballard is a community of people that pride themselves on being inclusive and it was extremely infuriating (1) to be wrongly accused of being too drunk - we're in our 30s and very capable of knowing when we have had too much and when we need to stop drinking, and (2) to know that this Ballard institution is so closed minded that their instinct was to assume someone presenting as male and entering a women's restroom could only be extremely drunk and could have no other reason to enter a women's restroom and therefore they needed to immediately refuse service to that person. We will not be coming back to Hattie's Hat after...
Read moreI was this many days old when I realized I've been missing out on this place my entire seattle life. I've driven past this place so many times and never took it serious. Well on this day my original restaraunt was out of all the good stuff so I decided to try something else in the area. I was parked next to the sign and figured u guess today is the day. I came on a Monday morning and the place had maybe 2 or 3 available.
My gloomy morning turned around when I saw the menu. So many items on the menu I wanted to try. I settled on the breakfast Sammie and I was not disappointed. Probably the best smothered breakfast sandwich I've ever tried. Very rich in flavor. Almost too rich. The biscuit was amazing and I wish more was on the side to enjoy without all the gravy. Very appropriate portion for the cost. I love their affordable pricing. I swear many places have removed small priced items, but you can make it your own here and not be mad at your customized breakfast price.
Wait they give you biscuits as a starter for free and it comes with a variety of spreads. Yes the desire for more biscuit was satisfied before I even had it. It was so yummy I saved half for a sweet treat after I was done with the main course. You get your monies worth here and luckily you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it.
The service was equally as amazing as the food. There was maybe 1 or 2 servers on duty and they were busy. I only seen 1 server and yes she was busy. Somehow she was able to serve us in a timely manner as if she wasn't solo. I was very impressed and sure to tip appropriately. Servers out there take note. The place gave 4 star world class service which for seattle is 5 stars shining.
I always judge a place by its cleanliness which is also jidge by the drinking water. My utinsils and drinking glasses where very clean. The water was on point, so clean without weird tastes. The interior of the place was probably the lowest point. Not bad, very typical of a ballard joint. Really could use some work when comparing to other uoscale places In the area. I'll take decor this over higher prices on any day forsure.
Parking in the area is not good but not the worst. The restaraunt is about a block away mass street parking so you should get lucky with a close enough spot. Especially compared to the other spots in this area. It gets so crowded. Good...
Read moreI ate breakfast here today, and it was bad. I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns and 2 eggs over easy. The eggs and hashbrowns were ordered a la carte because the menu lacks many standard combinations you'd expect to see at a typical diner.
I checked my phone at 12:36 PM to see if it was late enough to order from the lunch menu but decided against it. At 12:44 PM I received my food. Obviously I ordered at some point between those 2 times.
The hashbrowns were cold and had the texture of boiled diced potatoes. Not a particle of crispy potato to be found. They weren't even brown, just the sad, fluffy white of a potato whose potential has been wasted. They didn't even seem to be seasoned!
The gravy was thin and watery and also cold. In my experience making biscuits and gravy, the gravy typically sets and becomes paste-like when it becomes room temp. Not at Hatties! It was as thin as chicken noodle soup broth. And in a baffling turn of events, the gravy was sweet! Sweet, cold, watery gravy. Abysmal.
The eggs were cooked perfectly but would have tasted better if cooked in butter instead of oil. Runny yolks, but a perfectly set white. I find this confusing because the ability to do over easy eggs is typically a good benchmark for what a diner is capable of. Instead, everything was bad except the eggs.
I've literally never sent food back to the kitchen or asked for a refund before. But I did both today, and I hate it. They asked if I wanted something else instead, and I said no. Because I didn't trust them to make anything on their limited menu correctly after their complete and utter failure at their first attempt.
In summary, do not eat here. It is bad in unexpected and...
