got the Fried Chicken Sandwich
I don't know the last time I've had food this bad The fact that this sandwich was actually served is pretty ridiculous in my opinion
There are so many problems here Firstly, the bun tastes awful It barely had any sauce, didnt seem to be toasted, and tasted like straight up stale, cardboard-like bread It was not fluffy in any sense whatsoever.
I don't even know how you can get buns this bad - I could get significantly better buns by just going to a local grocery store How did this even happen
The toppings were like 90% lettuce and...nothing else? Pretty much the entire burger was just filled with lettuce The mayo was basically completely absent There was like one pickle which didn't taste good
Now to get to the absolute worst part of this meal, the chicken Starting from the outside, I ordered 'Hot', but what I got was spicy but still managed to have the breading taste pretty awful
It tasted like a spice mix was caked into the breading with no regard to flavor whatsoever - like the only goal was to make something feel spicy with no other regard for any other kind of flavor, like salt
This breading wasn't even crunchy at all - it mostly just stuck to the inside of the meat and provided an outer layer that was more painful to eat than anything else
Speaking of painful to eat, the actual chicken meat itself was so incredibly dry I was shocked that this was really the product that an actual restaurant served
Was this cooked to 200 degrees or something? How is this even possible. If I can make chicken that's significantly juicier than this, that becomes a pretty major problem for your restaurant. It would be in your best interest that the employee forgot about this chicken piece as it was cooking - because if this was your actual intent - I don't know how you're still in business
This was so bad at points even biting into the chicken wasn't enough to separate the breast - I literally had to pull the chicken away with my teeth to even take a bite. Incredibly dry and almost entirely inedible
At least the mac & cheese wasn't as bad as the chicken - although the cheese barely even tasted like cheese at all. It just felt like pasta with a dust of kimchi seasoning
That's not even bringing up the fact that this burger cost 16 dollars - which is incomprehensibly expensive for such a tragic creation I could get a hundred times better chicken sandwiches at Wingstop for 10 dollars less
Overall, a disastrous...
Read moreMy first time having Hawaiian fried chicken and turns out it's pretty good! I wound up ordering a medium spiciness chicken sandwich, some fries (and because I hadn't eaten all day), some of their kimchi mac 'n' cheese. But before I even get to the food itself, the pricing was surprisingly reasonable for a restaurant operating in the University Village. Some of the places in here charge pretty high prices for what's on offer, so getting good food like this with fairly generous portion sizes is great. Rarely do I come away from a meal at the Village with so little spent AND food leftover.
The fried chicken sandwich was well seasoned and exactly my kind of spiciness. The chicken itself had a great, crispy crunch and wasn't overdone and I loved the daikon pickles they use rather than your standard dill pickle. Still brought the acid you want from a pickle, but with an additional sweetness that was really nice. The kimchi mac 'n' cheese was a really nice spin on your traditional mac and the fries were nice and crispy on the outside but incredibly fluffy on the inside. Although if I had a detraction here, the fries were a bit over seasoned. Most of the fries were perfectly fine, but others just smacked you with saltiness in a way that left me refilling my cup of water a couple of times. Nowhere near a big enough issue to warrant the demerit of an entire star, but I'd be amiss in neglecting to mention it.
Overall, really solid fried chicken joint that brings a cool Hawaiian flair to something familiar without getting too cute about it and overcomplicating their recipes. And it happens to be at a pretty friendly price point....
Read moreWhenever I swing by U-Village I will most likely always hit up Ma'ono's Fried Chicken because they have some of my favorite food in all of U-Village!
Most of the times when I am at U-Village, I don't always want a huge meal, or sit down for a long time, and so that is why I love this place. They are super delicious, pretty quick, and is easy to eat! The food though is actually quite filling too.
I got the chicken tenders and fries, but this time I decided to spice things up and raise the spice level on my chicken. I usually get the mild level but I went for medium this time. I personally don't like too much spice, but I could definetly handle it. The french fries as always were super crisp on the outside and fluffy in the inside, and of course super tasty.
The chicken was the best part though. On the outiside it is crispy, and has a very good breading, and the spices brought the chicken to a whole other level! The spice was quite spicy but I could handle it but it was pretty good! It is pretty messy though and gets all over your fingers. It also got on my lips and made my lips burn for a bit, but that's part of the experience. I just can't imagine what it's like to get the hottest level! Anyways, the inside of the chicken was juicy and tender! I want to say that Ma'ono's is my favorite chicken place ever!
Plus I love how they are located in Rachels Ginger Beer because I love that place too and love their ginger beer and always get refills with...
