Our party of two patiently waited in line to put our name on the waitlist. We took note of who was standing in front and behind of us as we were standing in line for 5-10minutes. It was 5:25pm as we neared closer to the hostesses desk, and we were able to put our name on the waitlist around 5:27pm with a quoted wait time of 20-25 minutes. Great! Not too bad of a wait and we’re probably able to order for happy hour as it ends at 6pm.
Our party of two waits near the dog park that is 20 feet from the front door for our quoted wait time of 20-25 minutes and wonder why we haven’t received a text yet. We check back in to the hostesses desk and notice she sat two separate parties that were behind us in the waitlist line. I tell the host, “Hey why did you sit those two parties before us? We patiently waited and now it’s past 6pm.” She proceeded to say, “Oh well they called ahead and made reservations. You put your name down, remember?” I told her, “No, they were in line behind us to put their names down AFTER we put our names down, remember? So why were they sat first?”
Another server comes up to needlessly escalate the situation by raising her voice and tell my girlfriend and I, “tHeY pUt tHeIr NaMeS oN tHe rEseRvAtiOn BEFOREHAND! You two have to WAIT!” I stood there in awe, “Dude what we were just in line all putting our names down and they were specifically behind us. Now we can’t even order for happy hour which was our original intention. Can you please just get us a seat anywhere as we’ve been waiting now past our quoted time and see the other two parties happily enjoying their food.” The server looks disgusted, turns around and continues to expedite food to other tables. Like why did you even enter the conversation when you have no idea what happened???? The hostess rushes to sit us, disrespectfully putting our plates down on the table and says, “eNjOY”.
Then the server comes and greets us, we say hello and notice even more tension now. We order our food, receive the omakase $50 set and a chirashi bowl + bad boy roll. ‘
Here’s our experience of the food The rice was mushy, with too much water added during cooking process Not enough seasoning of salt, sugar, and vinegar in the sushi rice? Just tasted like regular white rice with fish on top…?? Fish tasted off? Odd? When was this shipped cause it tastes worse than Musashi slices of fish which are a third of the price. No wasabi in nigiri? Who trained the cooking staff? It was literally a slice of fish over rice as seen in the video posted. Miso soup bland, barely any flavor which indicates lack of miso product in the soup??
The server has not checked on us for 20 minutes now and we felt that it was too late to say anything now. We chewed our bland underwhelming nigiri and sashimi wondering why we even came to this location. We ask for the tab and as I am paying, the server finally asks, “How was the meal?” I replied with pretty much what was said in the bullet points above. She looks unamused, replying with, “The rice is mushy…? Huh. Okay well, sorry about that.” I sat there wondering, “Do you even care? Why are you asking if you’re not willing to change or voice concerns to the back of the house?” She hands me the tablet back with my credit card, total balance of $106.67, I click 0% on the tip as this was hands down the worst experience felt. She looks back at the tablet, stands there, chuckles, and walks away saying, “Have a great day.” Thanks Momiji SLU.
I’ve been to Ku Sushi, Musashi’s, Ume Sake House, Wasabi Bistro, Shiro’s, Sushi Kashiba, etc. All ranges of sushi cuts for cheap and budget to lavish and flavorful. We will never be going back and will warn our friends, family, and coworkers of this experience.
Cap Hill Momiji is significantly better, well thought out, organized, and is always a pleasant experience. We recently moved to SLU and assumed the experience would...
Read moreMomiji is a lovely place for consistently good sushi. My wife and I sat on the patio on a Friday evening after not having dined in for basically the entire pandemic. The South Lake Union location tends to seem less crowded than the Capitol Hill location, so we decided to try our luck. Called to make a reservation in the late afternoon/early evening. The host said it wasn't probably necessary, but as it turned out there was only one outdoor table left when we got in. They have a very nice heated patio that is great for a date night.
Service was attentive and efficient if not particularly formal. I think our server could tell we were not going to be particularly needy so gave us some space which was totally fine. Whenever we needed anything he was on it and we had a nice conversation with him when we paid our check.
The food as always was delicious. We had a couple different types of spicy rolls; I can't remember exactly what they were called, but I think the Moonraker was one of them. Both were delicious. We both had soup and split a seaweed salad along with the rolls. Everything was very tasty and the complimentary edamame is always a nice touch when you're already hungry when you sit down.
Overall, Momiji is a consistently great spot for tasty, modestly inventive sushi rolls in a Seattle nice but generally casual atmosphere. Since the SLU location is quieter than Capitol Hill, I might recommend it for a date night since it seems a bit more low key. I also expect it's easier to get in on a busy night. Free parking in the evenings and on weekends in the Amazon grages is a...
Read moreHave tried the cap hill location via takeout and food was great — there’s lines out that door so was glad to hear there was a location in SLU.
Came to this one. Overall very pleasant experience. Location is tight on space indoors for Saturday night but the outside area was warm enough. Managed to get in right before HH ended ($1-2 discount off full menu price for a large portion of menu). Staff is quick to take dishes off the table and fill water (as people noted below). I personally appreciate someone taking away my dishes quickly vs. having me to wait to order / wait to pay the bill. Whoever the owner or GM is, they are definitely managing a tight ship as staff always kept busy and making sure everyone was attended to.
A couple things — They took a LONG time to bring out our last sushi roll, basically after we ate two other apps, two rolls. Seems like they forgot when we asked for the update so if you think they’re taking a while for standard sushi rolls, it’s probably because they forgot (vs prepping). Lastly they forgot to bring me my tea but it was shown on the final bill (quickly removed once we brought it up). Another thing, which is so minor but for people who care about aesthetics, is that the sushi appears to have been rolled sloppily. I only noticed this because I started attempting to roll my own sushi and am personally terrible at it. However the quality / experience to price is still there (especially calamari and their version of Cali roll) so I’d come again. Thanks for the nice...
