I am writing this Google review with a deep sense of dissatisfaction and frustration regarding the recent charges I received after moving out of my apartment at McKenzie. I want to remind current residents and future tenants about the practices of the building management, which may lead to unjust charges and lack of accountability.
Throughout my tenancy at McKenzie, I have consistently been a responsible and diligent tenant, taking care of the apartment to the best of my abilities. However, I was shocked to receive unreasonable charges of $11,996.53 for carpet damage and $205.42 for a paint chargeback fee. These charges are completely unjustified and should not be my financial responsibility.
During the move-out inspection, which was conducted in person, only a cleaning fee was mentioned. No mention whatsoever was made of any additional paint chargeback fee. I was under the impression that the purpose of this inspection was to address any discrepancies or additional charges. However, I was denied the opportunity to discuss these issues on the spot, raising serious doubts about the fairness of this process. This lack of transparency and fairness seems to be a recurring issue with the management's treatment of tenants.
Furthermore, it is crucial to note that during the inspection, the management acknowledged that the imperfections in the apartment were considered normal wear and tear. Unfortunately, no documentation was provided to support this statement. The absence of evidence further undermines the credibility of the charges imposed.
Regarding the charge for carpet damage, I would like to clarify the circumstances. Throughout my entire lease term, which ended on June 6th, I can confidently affirm that I did not cause any damage to the carpet. The incident involving the spilled paint occurred on June 7th, solely due to the carelessness of the staff. I responsibly disposed of the paint on the night of June 6th, well before this incident took place. Consequently, it is entirely unjust and unreasonable for me to be held accountable for the paint spill and subsequent damage to the carpet.
Moreover, it is important to highlight that neither the lease agreement nor any explicit policy stated that paint must be disposed of on the loading deck. Additionally, paint is not classified as furniture. Given the circumstances, where the paint lid was destroyed and could not be securely closed, I made the responsible decision to place it in the designated storage room for recycling items. This was to prevent any potential damage to the garbage chute. Placing a bottle of paint on the loading deck, which is regularly occupied by numerous pieces of furniture, would have increased the risk of accidental spillage on other tenants' belongings. It is fundamentally unfair and unacceptable to hold me responsible for the mistakes or negligence of the staff.
According to Washington Law, the principles of negligence and liability dictate that those responsible for the damage should be held accountable for the associated costs. In this particular case, it is unequivocally clear that the apartment staff directly caused the paint spill and subsequent damage to the carpet, not me. It is distressing to bear the financial burden for their actions, which were entirely beyond my control.
Throughout my tenancy at McKenzie, I had hoped that the management company would prioritize the rights and interests of its residents. Unfortunately, my recent experience shattered this hope. It is deeply disheartening to be unjustly charged for damage caused solely by the negligence of the cleaning team.
I hope this review serves as a reminder to current residents and future tenants to be aware of the practices of the building management at McKenzie. They may require you to cover damages caused by their own staff, placing an unfair burden on tenants. Exercise caution and ensure that you are not held financially responsible for the mistakes or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBackground: Iāve lived at Mckenzie for about 9 months now, and I had held the apartment for about 2.5 months before that. We were the first to live in this unit.
To start, I havenāt dealt with any of the noise problems a lot of the other reviewers comment on. That may be because Iām on a higher floor - but we do directly face the construction zone. To me, everything has been average city noise or quieter.
The Good Building is beautiful, everything is high quality, the apartment is spacious for a 1 bedroom, and the location is awesome The views on the roof canāt be beat, and I love the multiple seating options (sun chairs, tables/chairs, bar, fire pits, etc.) The spa is wonderful, although I find I donāt use it much Most of the front desk staff are pleasant and kind, and really helpful Iāve had nothing but wonderful experiences with the maintenance staff
Despite all of the above, the below is why Iāve given such a low rating.
The Worst I havenāt determined whether Iāll be renewing our lease or not, but I can say Iām pretty terrified for whenever we decide to move out. The building has been making it incredibly hard for neighbors to move out, making outrageous fees to keep the security deposit (charging hundreds for repainting when someone only lived here for a year, charging for damage when itās just a fingerprint on an otherwise spotless counter/appliance, etc.). The building claims that ānormal wear and tearā is not in their lease, and thatās why they can charge these exorbitant fees (Iām not entirely sure if thatās even legal in Washington State). Itās honestly to the point that Iām thinking of getting a lawyer if I ever choose to move out, because Iām that afraid of how this will go.
The Bad During peak evening hours, the elevators can take a long time to get to you or stop at a lot of floors due to there only being 4 in the entire building Many times, when speaking to the front desk or leasing staff, I get the feeling that Iām annoying them. I completely avoid certain people. The pet relief area can get very gross, but I imagine itās really hard to keep up with the amount of dogs in the building Slowly, the building seems to be making decisions that seem more driven on gaining profits rather than providing a great living experience The roof space is rented almost every single weekend, all weekend. I donāt even try to use it anymore. The guests for those parties arenāt always cordial ā Iāve been barked at by a group of drunk men while getting on the elevator. The garage is awful, itās a circle that really only allows for one car to go at a time. This leads to a lot of almost accidents around corners, and you can get stuck waiting for lines of people to pass during rush hour. Moreso on the garage, McKenzie recently rented a bunch of the lower floors to Amazon, which makes coming in/out...
