Schilling Cider House — Restaurant in Seattle

I love Schilling ciders so I was looking forward to checking out the tasting room and try some new flavors. I recently moved up here so was eager to find a new go-to spot. I came in at 10:30pm on a Saturday and saw they closed at 11pm, but there was still a couple groups of people inside. Just to be safe, I asked the 2 bar tenders if they are still serving and they reluctantly said 'yes but it's last call right now' I looked at the menu trying to quickly decide what to get and neither of the people working attempted to interact with us at all or make any suggestions, which honestly defeats the purpose of going to a tasting room instead of just buying them from the store. When I go to tasting rooms, I am used to interacting with people that are friendly and enjoy talking about the products they are selling; these people were the exact opposite, cold and uninviting. We decided to just get a flight since we could clearly tell they did not want to help us and instead treated us like a huge inconvenience. Once we got our drinks, they then proceeded to aggressively stack all of the chairs around us up on the tables and blast the music which did not make us feel welcome. We decided to just leave before finishing the flights because it was clear they did not want us there. It would have been easier for them to just be honest with us and say they are closed which we would have totally understood, but instead they took our money knowing we wouldn't get the proper experience. We both work in the industry so we understand it is not ideal to have customers come in last minute, however we came in 30 minutes before closing, not 5 minutes. We ended up leaving there at 10:47pm which is still well before they actually are supposed to close. Overall, this was such a disappointing experience, I would much rather go somewhere with friendlier service and a more inviting atmosphere that isn't run by people who act like teenagers who aren't getting their way. I love this place and have been going once a week since I discovered it! They have a fantastic selection of ever rotating ciders and nothing but ciders. Seriously, if your friend pouts if there's no IPA, don't bring them here.

Also, they are a dedicated gluten free bar! I asked once if there was any chance of gluten in a drink and the bartender said once they accidentally got a beer in and they replaced the entire tap line just to be safe.

The ciders on tap are all clearly color coded from sweet to dry, the staff is very knowledgeable and makes great recommendations, and there's several large coolers with even more bottled options available.

They don't serve food, but you can bring your own in. Parking has never been a problem for me, as long as you go in the evening clutter by street parking is free and plentiful. It can get a little crowded sometimes, but nothing excessive. I'm guessing there's a pattern to the busy times, but I haven't figured it out yet.

It can get a bit loud because they have tons of board games you can just grab and play, so there is always that one group laughing and shouting about Apples to Apples or something, but it's not excessive - normal bar/restaurant volume. I have been coming to this location for over 7 years. In that time I've seen staff turnover, neighborhood discounts come and go, and plenty of changes. Adding a big screen TV for events was a nice touch, but closing at 10 rather than 11 cut off my friends and I from our usual hangout following our Friday event ending at 10. It was sad, but reasonable, as the bar was generally not more than half full by 10 on a Friday night. The last straw for me has been the last month and change, where this location has been out of growlers, crowlers, and lids for both. This limits to-go options to the downsized reach-in case(1/3rd of the case is empty), making selection little better than any number of grocery stores. This week, there were more upscaling changes(changing the seating from stools to tall chairs with a backrest, revamped flight cards, a new cocktail napkin setup, and removing the serving mat from the main bar counter) as well as a new staff uniform(previously no distinct uniform).
