A really special Mexican restaurant with a very unique menu...
My wife and I wanted to try something different today so we went to Siesta Key to try our luck there, but yet again, to no avail - it was busy for an early Sunday dinner. Not wanting to wait (or honestly deal with the horrible parking situation on that island) we asked ourselves what we really wanted to try on our penultimate night in Sarasota - Mexican it was!
After searching through Yelp, I came across this little, inconspicuous place located not very far from where we were staying. So, off in a flash (or at least as fast as the equally horrible traffic on Siesta Key allows - did I mention it was a Sunday?)
We arrived at a nondescript strip mall where the one end was this restaurant, you get to seat yourself and soon enough our waitress was at our table. Service was very friendly, very helpful, and very accommodating to our questions and requests for refills and whatnot - she took good care of us.
Now, the menu - it was by far and large the most unique Mexican restaurant menu I have ever come across. They labeled their dinner entrees as traditional Mexican favorites - but over half the menu was unknown to me - meaning, I had never heard of some of these offerings or plates. And to me, that was a great thing. After long deliberation I chose the Machete - a corn tortilla that they grill and fill with your protein of choice (I chose chorizo) and added gooey cheese as a plus. My sides were a Mexican salad (pico de gallo with shredded lettuce) along with yellow rice. It was supremely delicious. My wife had their tortilla salad which she enjoyed as well.
It was an early Sunday afternoon, so we kinda beat the dinner crowd, but I sure do hope the locals are showing this Mexican restaurant the love it deserves - their unique menu is unparalleled...
Read more[ UPDATE! Make sure you take a look at the response I got from THE OWNER! Blaming others for your lack of friendliness? Saying I don't know real food. The response says a lot about this restaurant and the people that work there. Take responsibility for your food and staff behavior. All that over a 3 star review. Well guess what? Now it's a one star because you obviously don't care or want to change. ] This is a mixed review. On one hand the food was good, Not amazing but very good. The service was mediocre and the prices are not on par with the overall experience. The prices seem to change without warning. There is no set price for protein substitutions and I was given a different prices for the same meal on different occasions. The atmosphere is traditional but the space is empty and depressing. The food was good and I will say they have the 2nd best gorditas I have ever had. The tacos are nothing special and are almost plain American style. The burritos aren't very big and cost too much. The service was not great. No smiles, No greeting just take the over and go sit down. There are soooo many great Mexican restaurants and food trucks in this town. If you are going to compete with them you have to at least try. People will not come back when they discover these better places. I feel like the only people that come to eat here are the old people that live in The landings or down the street. The owner would rather respond with a rude reply than to admit anything is wrong with their restaurant. That speaks volumes about this place and should be everything you...
Read moreWent for the first time tonight and will look forward to going back. Gonna start with some constructive feedback as I really hope to see you succeed! When we pulled in, we almost left based on how dirty and smeared the windows were. If you look at how customer's psychology works for restaurants, this along with dirty bathrooms often can turn away customers. Not welcoming to walk into... That said, we gave it a chance because I read so many great reviews online. I ordered the fajitas. The steak was tough and chewy, didn't work while having in a tortilla without cutting up into little pieces. The rest of the fajitas were AWESOME! Great shrimp, chicken, blistered bell peppers and onions...fantastic! Got some house made medium and hot sauce...both GREAT! My buddy got the Tolteca which he loved. I tried the chorizo and mexican cheese from it which were GREAT! Excited to try again, wanting to try out the...
