I am going to start off by saying, I love sushi! Raw, cooked, seaweed, or soy paper, I love it all! I ordered the soft shell crab roll (because I mean. Soft shell crab is magical) and chicken teriyaki! The sushi had good flavor but wasn't rolled very well at all. It fell apart the moment I touched it. My chicken teriyaki was delicious but I was only given a small bowl of rice that was maybe half full so that was very disappointing, especially since I paid 16$ for it. My biggest peeve here was the customer service. We sat down and the waiter didn't even introduce himself. He came over once and seemed peeved that i was asking questions. Now granted this was my first time here so I asked questions about their specials and what exactly was Included in the meal. The young man seemed so annoyed with my questions that although I had a couple more questions and wanted to ask for suggestions, I chose not to. When we came in we noticed that there were dirty plates at almost every table. He had to clean off the table to make space for us. I thought maybe he was busy. It seemed like he was more interested in talking with one gentleman who didn't even sit down to eat (it seemed like he was picking up food) than to pay attention to us. He left all the plates that we had finished at our table until we left and seemed very annoyed when we asked for a drink refill. He didn't seem very happy to be working and although because of covid, I've been trying to give better tips this young man didn't do much to deserve a good tip. We never saw anyone else come out so there was no one i could talk to in the moment but I dont think ill be coming back. Service was also extremely slow. We got there at 8 and didn't get our food till 930....is that normal??

Basically overpriced, snooty, and poor...

We were there after spending time at the Falls and was craving for sushi. We googled sushi places closest to the downtown area. And there you have it! Sushi Masa on Phillips Ave, downtown. The place was like Sioux Falls best kept secret as it was this small restaurant at the corner. It was pretty small, but we could see the patrons really enjoying their meals. There was a bit of a wait. But we hanged in there and it was worth the wait. The one lone waiter was Phil and he flipped a table for us right away. We had a booth seating that was intimate for couples. We waited awhile and we noticed people were waiting for their orders to go. But that didn’t stop us from enjoying our evening. The waiter Phil came up to wait on us and he even showed us and explained to us the several different Sakes to choose from. The best Sake was the most expensive one. The food was out of this world!! It’s like an out of this world experience. The presentation was excellent, the Sashimi was fresh, the servers were always coming around to offer us more water. The miso soup is nothing we’ve tasted before. It had onions & potatoes. The House dressing on our salad was the best I’ve tasted. They even allow us to bring some home. Phil was so accommodating, he even took the time to explain to us about our food and asked us how are stay was in Sioux Falls so far. He even recommended a few places for us to explore later. We’re from out of the area. So that was nice and he took the extra mile to do that for us. And we complimented the Chef Fumi for his creation, and presentation of our meal. You know when you have to wait a little longer, it is done with passion & integrity. Thank you Chef Fumi & Phil and the staff there. We will be back when we’re...

I love the building and main room. It's small but spacious for many dining tables. Inside it's very cozy and comfortable, and could easily swing from romantic to family depending on who you are with.

I loved the service as well, the waiter brough some hot towels for your hands and was very kind with suggestions and checking on us during our decisions on what to order. I really liked the menu as well, yes you have your standard sushi and sushimi that you will get elsewhere, but they also have legit Japanese dishes that you just won't find in Sioux Falls. Probabbly not unless you were to go to Minneapolis in Minnesota for your closest option.

I got the Okonomi Yaki which is like a Japanese pancake that's stuffed with seafood and lots of good stuff and sauces. It's huge, and could easily be split between two people but I ate it all because I like to hate myself later at night I guess. It was delicious, a bit heavy on sauces I think for my taste, but I'll definitely order it again. The person I was with also got a rice bowl with a Japanese omelette ontop (don), and that was great as well. The rice was well cooked and the flavors were dripping down and flavoring the whole dish. Sort of like a much heartier bibimbap from Korean restaurants but with egg.

If you want legit and home made Japanese meals beyond sushi and some basic noodle dishes. Go here. This is the place in Sioux Falls you are...

Sushi Masa feels like a traditional Japanese restaurant. It has a variety of Japanese issues beyond sushi. The menu has different sushi combos as well. This is not the place to get fancy rolls. I got chirashi, my go to dish to try a variety. It came with a salad that was drenched in miso dressing. It was iceberg lettuce that tasted like it had been frozen. The miso soup was okay, it had potato pieces in it which is unusual. The chirashi itself was awesome, it was a large dish with a great variety and the fish was very fresh, with melt in your mouth tuna. I also like the booths in the restaurant, it feels cozy. The service was attentive. It's a little pricey than other sushi in Sioux Falls but the fish really was high quality. Would give 4.5 stars, the decrease from 5 stars was due to the salad and soup.

Listen... I love sushi. I've been to Japan, I've even been fortunate to have omakase sushi in the old Tsukiji fish market. I've also tried several sushi places in the US. This is, hands down, the best nigiri I have had outside of Japan. I'd even argue it's better than some sushi I've had IN Japan! I can only speak for the nigiri as that's all I had. But the pieces of fish were cut perfectly. Thick, large cuts of tuna, salmon, and Hamachi. They even put the perfect amount of Wasabi for you between the fish and the rice, just the way it's done in Japan. (If you don't like Wasabi or prefer to do it on your own, you can always ask them to leave it out). It can definitely be a bit pricey, but I promise it's filling and deliciously worth trying at least once.
