Fawick Park — Attraction in Sioux Falls Township

Fawick Park is one of those overlooked gems that everyone drives by. It sits between two viaducts going in and out of downtown Sioux Falls so the rumble of traffic fades and rises constantly. If you don't know exactly where to look and fail to ask a local, it's easy to miss.

Once you do find it, parking is on the street but make sure you feed the hungry meters. There is a full-sized cast of Michelangelo's "David" with no fig leaf, just the way the original was made. David has been a presence in downtown Sioux Falls since the early 1970s when he was placed here and had a virtual jungle planted around him for the sake of conservative decency.

Eventually the jungle gave way but not so much because opinion had changed as it was found that Fawick Park had been the former site of a coal gasification plant that left a toxic legacy. The entire park had to be literally dug out and hauled away. The park was eventually rebuilt but with David turned to look towards the West and downtown and moved closer to the street since his old spot was now in a floodplain.

In spite of the traffic noise, Fawick Park is a pleasant enough park but just be aware that a few people hanging around the park tend to make photographers uncomfortable at times even when they are plainly shooting the...

It's a great scenic place to sit and take it all in. The only down side....It's now the temporary bus stop so you get asked "got a smoke I can bum" 2-3 times in a matter of minutes. But don't let that deter you. This park is beautiful. Historical time capsule on site. Sundial (just in case you feel the need to keep your phone in your pocket). Many seats by the river. Mini rapids to give you that awesome flowing water sound. How could I forget Moonlight Movies. Bring a chair or cuddle on a blanket and watch free movies under the stars.
