Where to start? Let me say first of all that I lived in London for a year so dining here was to be a nostalgic treat. The place is nice and airy and they have an extensive menu. I was giddy at the thought of fish and chips, the sound of their accents, and ready for a delightful experience, particularly when I saw how friendly and cheerful they were to customers in line ahead of me. I couldn't wait for my turn. When it came however, the three people working the counter suddenly became deadly quiet and seemed to not notice I was the last remaining customer to be helped. I just stood there in line, by myself for upwards of four minutes. Only two tables were in use and one remaining customer awaited her order (others had picked up to go). I stood. So long that the customers in the store began to take notice. Looking at me then the employees and back to me. I was embarrassed but I stood, determined to see it through and resisting the urge to think my dark skin had anything to do with their refusal to acknowledge me with the same warm greeting other customers received, or a nod to say they'll be with me. Nothing. When it was clear I wasn't leaving the order taker asked what he could get me. I ordered the most expensive item, the full fish and chips for 12.00. The woman rang me up and called the order to go. Didn't ask me, just decided. The cheery, bright, chattiness of the place resumed with the White customer who then came in. My heart sank, but I still held out for a good meal. Alas, no. My food was over cooked, greasy and soggy. Nothing like London fish and chips. It's like they took old food, threw it in the fryer and wrapped it up for me. I hope I'm wrong, but I got the feeling that Black patrons are not welcome at this...
Read moreA very long time ago, Union Jack's was just another Blimpie's and I liked it better than Subway, but unfortunately it still had that same, flat, franchise vibe and flavor. I can't begin to even describe how wonderfully this place has evolved ever since they gave up the bland, boring, national franchise and carved out their own little, local, sandwich shop niche instead. They slice the meats and cheeses to order right in front of you. They somehow always manage to have the freshest tasting veggies, too. Ron and Shelley are the owners and are usually right there serving in the trenches for hungry lunchtime patrons with the rest of their very pleasant and cheerful crew. They make everything from subs to paninis and wraps. In addition to sandwiches, they also serve the most delicious, beer battered onion rings I've ever eaten, as well as very tasty fish and chips. Union Jack's always has great specials too and it has been well worth my gamble every time that I've tried a new special rather than sticking to just my favorites off of their regular menu. They also have a better selection of soft drinks than most other restaurants and are probably the only place in the area to have both Coca Cola and Pepsi products as well as some specialty brands, too. Union Jack's is definitely the number one sandwich shop in Burlington, if not all of Chittenden County, and I savor my...
Read moreIf you're in the mood for a satisfying sandwich in Burlington, Vermont, you might want to check out the Union Jacks During my recent visit, I tried the Italian deli salami sandwich and the beef and onion rings and Swiss cheese sandwich. First of all, the sandwiches were generously sized and very filling. The Italian deli salami sandwich was packed with high-quality, thinly sliced salami, along with fresh lettuce, tomato, and a zesty mayo-based sauce. The bread was fresh and had a satisfying texture, with just the right amount of chewiness.
The beef and onion rings and Swiss cheese sandwich was also quite good, although not as outstanding as the Italian deli salami sandwich. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the onion rings added a nice crunch. However, the Swiss cheese was somewhat lacking in flavor and didn't stand out as much as I would have liked.
Unfortunately, the French fries were not to my taste. They were a bit too greasy and lacked the crispy exterior I was hoping for. However, this could just be a matter of personal preference, as some people might enjoy them that way.
Overall, I would recommend Union Jacks for its delicious sandwiches, especially the Italian deli salami sandwich. However, I might skip the French fries next time and try one of their other...
