My wife and I are in town from California visiting family. We were so excited to visit Plaza Azteca as we can’t get this kind of Mexican food where we live. We were a party of 7 on a Saturday evening. We were seated right away at a great table.
Mingo was our server. I didn’t get the feeling he was thrilled to be at work and serving us. He lacked eye contact and general concern for our overall experience. He did bring us everything we requested. Was just lacking in bed side manner. So to speak.
Let’s get one thing straight. Drinks are on point. You’re getting what you’re paying for. We ordered several different Margaritas. All amazing. Shout out bar staff. Queso came out luke warm at best. A bit of a disappointment as we can’t order white cheese dip in California. No one has it.
I got the chicken and cheese quesadilla. Which they had to sell me two kid’s quesadillas. Fine. The quesadilla came out with tons of chicken. Which was great. But hardly any cheese. Again- a bit annoying. I ended up not eating it. Not worth the calories. Also- my side of sour cream was $3. I’d say a bit steep.
My wife got the Philly Cheesesteak Burrito. She said it was AMAZING. She was very pleased with her meal.
Overall- I feel like you can do better. Mingo did not help our experience. My wife and I both work in service. There was a lack of engagement from Mingo that was unfortunate. The food was variable. I was hoping for a lot more given I’m only in town for a few days. I was so excited to have Mexican food.
We did hang out at the bar for another drink. Our bartender was great. Went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcomed.
I doubt we will be back. Wish your establishment...
Read moreAug 2025 update == Came with a party of 8. Menu has changed some items. We missed one item that we really liked, but tried the Chile Relleno (Loaded) which was good and one of the new chicken dishes. The chicken was pounded very thin so it was cooked too long on the grill and ended up being dry. The same problem affected the grilled fish tacos. Other then that though, it was still very tasty and the staff is still amazing.
This is a huge space that will accommodate either very large parties or many smaller ones. It is at least the second outpost of this national chain in the Pittsburgh area and features the same menu to be found in all of them. The only thing i noticed that was different was the page size.
Servers were friendly, fast, and efficient. The table side guacamole cart was well stocked and the man making it knew his business. He made the adjustments we asked for with no problems.
Food came out fast, was tasty, and was not too expensive. So while this is definitely a chain, what's not to like?
May 2021 Update: Went again, now that COVID restrictions are being lifted and had a wonderful meal. Domingo was an absolute gem with his sense of humor and catering to our needs. Food was excellent as well. Definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant...
Read moreTwo words for the plant based group…Vegan Bowl. As I’ve discussed in other reviews, not a huge mushroom fan. If a restaurant gets me to not pick out the mushrooms it is a sign of some sort of culinary genius. Of course, I could have just ordered without, but I was tired from a long day of dorm packing and just didn’t think about it. So glad I didn’t…absolutely delicious. The portion was massive…and I ate most everything. If you are hungry, as I was, they will not disappoint.
The drinks at the bar looked refreshingly yummy, which was not surprising after looking at the pages deep margarita menu. I was picking up so I’ll have to give one of them a try next time.
The restaurant is spotless and for a place that spacious that was impressive. For Pittsburgh sports lovers, they had the TV’s tuned in and the bar has plenty of space for those wanting to hang out and watch a game. The atmosphere was welcoming for all ages though and the only problem with the menu is that it all looks so good you are bound to over order. It’s okay though, they know how to pack a to-go bag so nothing leaks!
They run specials throughout the week, check their website...
