Making the trip from Durham to Charleston, I decided to use US 1 and US 52 instead of the boring sameness of I 40, I 95, and I 26. After an hour or two on the road, I like to stop for breakfast. Being a fan of local establishments and wishing to avoid franchise facilities, I used Google Maps to explore for "breakfast restaurants" along the route. For those that were convenient, I perused the online menu. Sizzlin' Steak or Eggs in Southern Pines look intriguing. An hour and a half down the road, I pulled into their parking lot. Immediately knew I had made the right choice. Not only was the parking lot jammed; there was a fire truck parked as well. Got what looked to be the last parking space. The place was filled with families, guys meeting with friends for Saturday breakfast, and at least 6 members of the local fire brigade. (Hence the firetruck in the parking lot.) Grabbed what might have been the only empty booth. Despite the warning sign on the door that they were short of staff and asking for patience, we were promptly greeted by a waitress with menus and request for drink orders. Coffees and water appeared shortly with request for breakfast orders. GF had the Bonne Femme omelet with hash browns and biscuit. I had French toast with sausage. All was delicious. Offered coffee refills without requesting them. With the good food and service accompanied by a local casual decor, it is easy to understand why this is a popular place. Will definitely stop by on next jaunt through Southern Pines. On a separate note; the teenage girl cashier did not look happy. She could obviously imagine more enjoyable ways to spend a Saturday morning. She was pleasant and efficient but would have been glad to...
Read moreWe had several restaurant choices in this area. Sizzlin' Steak or Eggs had the most vehicles in the lot, so we chose it. We're so glad we did!! VERY reasonably priced, friendly wait staff, and a neat, clean, retro-style environment. The food though--it was delicious! We had a simple breakfast: eggs, hash browns, crispy bacon, wheat toast, and split an order of grits with cheese. The portions were generous. Over easy eggs cooked perfectly (no runny whites) for dunking the toast. Hash browns were that-brown outside and tender inside. And crispy, crunchy bacon done just right!! You wouldn't think bacon is hard to do, yet there is a balance point between "crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth" and "done well use it as a tack hammer." Excellent work, Steak or Eggs! We'll be driving 30 miles (one way) to eat with y'all again. (P.S...I have only eaten grits a handful of times. If I'd had them before, prepared in the smooth, creamy, textured and flavorful way your cooks prepare them, I'd be a frequent grits...
Read moreI was excited about coming to this restaurant after reading all of the positive reviews. However, I was sorely disappointed with my experience. We did not have a single wait staff member attending to us, and as a result service seemed to lack. Coffee was only refilled twice, and at the price I paid for it, I would've enjoyed several cups. My food was decent, but nothing to rave about. When I first got my food, I found a hair in it. The waitress took it back and got me a new plate, which I appreciate, but this meant that everyone else at the table finished before me. There was no apology or compensation for this. I ordered the breakfast plate and added sausage. I was asked if I wanted one or two pieces of sausage, so I ordered two pieces. I would not have done this if I had realized each piece was going to cost me $2.79. With tip I spent almost $15 for breakfast for one person. I could've gone to Waffle House and eaten twice the amount of food and left satisfied, and I...
