Very disappointed after our first visit. We came here for dinner last week for the first time after hearing positive things from our friends. We tried the tirade to sashimi, the lobster roll, the mix tempura, and the gyudon. Not one dish stood out to us as being done very well. Service was cold and kind of rude, and they seemed annoyed to have to serve us or answer normal questions.
As for food, I have never had tempura at a Japanese place with such an odd choice of vegetables or such a bland dipping sauce. The whole thing lacked flavor and I was just scratching my head at the tempura button mushroom (shouldn’t it at least be a shiitake mushroom), the bell pepper, or the tempura broccoli. Like were they out of the regular stuff and just decided to use whatever comes in a bag of stir fry mix? Very lacking in salt. I asked for a different dipping sauce as theirs didn’t taste like the sauces I have had elsewhere. That sauce also was bland.
The sushi rolls here are priced higher than most other comparable places but did not impress. The lobster roll was ok. Not anything to write home about.
The tiradito sashimi was ok. The balance of the lemon and jalepeño was a little off but overall ok. Overpriced.
Gyudon was one of the worst executions of the dish I have had. Too salty, beef cuts were not thin enough and chewy, and if I didn’t know what it was I wouldn’t have thought it was gyudon. Just salty rice and chewy beef. Although I did see caramelized onions in the dish, I couldn’t really taste them. It is also the most I have paid recently for a gyudon, so that was very disappointing that it did not taste like it should. I do not recommend ordering this dish at all.
I feel at some point this was a very good sushi restaurant, but our first visit there was lackluster did not make us want to return. If you go, stick to the rolls and sushi and away from their...
Read moreWe have eaten at Sushi Sam a handful of times the last few years. Food has always been decent, even if over priced. Service has always been okay. Nothing outstanding, nothing terrible, however after our last experience, we won’t be going back. There are plenty of other similar restaurants in the area that are less expensive. I ordered 2 orders of the tempora shrimp udon noodle soup. I went to pick up the order because both my kids were sick. About 5 plus minutes after I left I got a phone call from the restaurant telling me I need to come back because they gave me my order, plus someone else’s order. I proceeded to turn around, but it was rush hour and that isn’t an easy process on Southlake Blvd. A few minutes later, they called me back again, demanding I return and pressuring me to rush. At this point I decided not to return since they weren’t apologizing for wasting my time, but being demanding. When I got home and went over the order, there was NOTHING extra. I turned around and got yelled at by their staff for nothing. I’m also completely grossed out that they’d give someone food after sending it off with someone else. We will not be...
Read moreWe went and visited Sushi Sam this past Thursday because of the number of positive reviews we had been seeing on Yelp. We arrived a little later in the evening and the restaurant was still hopping, a testimony of it's strong following in the Southlake area.
We ordered four different Sushi rolls. The sushi was good and or course fresh, We also ordered the Crab Rangoon as an appetizer. I was impressed with the Crab Rangoon, the size of the portion was very generous. They are taking an egg roll wrapper and turning it into a wonton filled with crab meat and cream cheese. The sushi rice was underseasoned in my opinion, leaving the sushi a little underflavored overall.
The staff were very attentive during our meal and checked on us multiple times to make sure that we had everything we needed and to refill drinks. Our one problems is that we were seated at a small table for two each roll came out on a separate large plate. We really did not have enough room to hardly fit all the plates on the table making me a little claustrophobic...
