Feedstore BBQ is one of the fastest BBQ restaurants that I have gotten my food at with it still being very good. The people that are making the food operate like a well oiled machine with not much small talk, which I definitely liked. I got my order in, my sides on my tray, and some rolls all within a very short amount of time. Most of the food you'll get is already cooked behind the counter, such as meats and sandwiches, though if you get something fried like catfish or okra you'll get a number and they will bring it to your table later. One of my favorite things about feedstore BBQ is how you get your rolls- they are in a heated device to the right of the cash register that keeps them warm, and they are self-served and replenished often. Feedstore BBQ has some of the best rolls I've had, and I have been tagging along with some friends that are doing the Texas Monthly Top BBQ restaurants. They also have a soft serve ice cream machine which is free to use with a kid's meal, but costs 50 cents for everyone else. It's based on an honor system with a jar on top, and though I've never had it before I'm sure it's good. The food is of a great quality. I am a catfish man to the heart, and their catfish is 12 or 13 dollars (can't remember specifics right now) you get 4 moderately sized fillets, 3 hush puppies, and 2 sides which is a respectable and delicious amount of food for the price you pay for it. Unlike some catfish places whose catfish is 10% fish 90% breading, Feedstore BBQ sells full and delicious catfish fillets that definitely filled me up. The restaurant's atmosphere is great, and has that classic Texas feel- interesting maps, pictures, and neon signs. The only detractor was that I wasn't a big fan of the sausage they used for their sausage sandwich, but that is a petty dislike at best and does not deserve me knocking a star off of this review as it is just personal preference.
Too Long, Didn't read summary: Quality Feedstore BBQ is BBQ that you will get fast and it will still be good. The staff is a well oiled machine, and their rolls are aplenty and are always warm. Catfish is great portion size for its price, and the restaurant itself has a great Texas feel to it. Have a...
Read moreSitting among some really incredible homes in Southlake, just west of the DFW airport, is a quiet, unassuming BBQ joint called Feedstore BBQ. The name is fitting, as this place was originally the Bailey Feed Store, and has been around since the 1950’s. The current BBQ restaurant opened in 2001, and has been providing folks around the Southlake area with smoked meats since then. I got to try Feedstore BBQ recently with my cousin and his family, who live not too far from there. I had to go with the Texas Trinity of brisket, sausage and pork ribs, which all looked delicious. Once you get your meats, which are sliced right in front of you, their sides are just down the line, and are self-serve. I went with the corn and potato salad. They also offer self-serve rolls and three different kinds of barbecue sauce.
Pork ribs – According to my cousin, Feedstore BBQ is best known for their pork ribs. They use St. Louis-cut ribs. So I started there. The ribs had a great color, very nice chewy/tacky bark, were very-nicely smoked – not over- or under-cooked, and they had an outstanding flavor. My cousin was spot on about the ribs. They’re worth the trip all by themselves.
Brisket – I asked for and got moist brisket. The bark was very good, and there was a good smoke ring. The smoky, meaty flavor was excellent as well. But sadly the fat was not quite done rendering, so a couple bites were a bit too chewy and rubbery. Still, it was a solid brisket overall.
Sausage – I tried the jalapeño cheddar sausage, which was good. The grind was good, and the casing was not overly chewy, with a very good flavor and was not overwhelmed with the jalapeño flavor and heat.
Sides & accouterments – The corn was very standard – certainly nothing to write home about. The potato salad was also very serviceable. The yeast rolls were very good. Their barbecue sauces are quite good – they offer a traditional tomato-based sauce, a spicy version with some extra kick, and my favorite was a South Carolina-style mustard-based sauce.
Feedstore BBQ may not ever make a Texas Monthly BBQ list for outstanding smoked meats. But they deliver very solid-quality barbecue in a comfortable and beautiful area of the...
Read moreFeedstore BBQ is in my top 10 BBQ places. Their lean brisket is truly lean. If you want lean or wet brisket or a mixture - you need to be up front about it to the guy who is cutting your meat for you - or else you get what you get. I usually order mostly lean with just “a little bit of wet brisket” and that usually works out pretty good for me.
I like their green beans, and usually order double green beans for low carb meal. They have a small condiment area with Mrs. Baird’s White Sandwich Bread, and they also have rolls (which in my very humble opinion are tasteless and dry.) I don’t even bother since we eat keto bread. There’s also pickles, onions, butter, relishes, and peppers that you can put on your plate or load up some to go.
They have CHICKEN FRIED STEAK on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. About the only places I like CFS is at Babe’s or at Sweetie Pie’s. This was a true steak from what I could tell and not a cube steak that has been pounded to death. Lol. The meat was good. Hubby said he likes better than Babe’s CFS which shocks me. I still prefer the taste of Babe’s - but the meat was probably better quality here at Feedstore. It is $17 for the CFS plate on Tues and Thurs.
I haven’t eaten any lately, but their cobbler used to be really good.
The only thing I don’t like and or understand is the feeling I get when I walk in the door. Every. Single. Time. The workers all stand there watching you waiting for you to order, but it’s like you’re putting them out by being in there. It’s always been that way. This time there was a very nice young man running the cash register, and we were chatting and they got onto him for not jumping to the next customer who was literally just standing there waiting to finish her order up and the pay. I felt bad for the guy. Nicest one in there. Anyways we usually get this to go and don’t eat in the...
