So glad Fishy Fishy Cafe was busy, because otherwise we might not have tried this new restaurant! (new to us) Since Covid 19 a lot of things have changed including not being able to get a good Mahi sandwich, (nearby) my favorite! When we saw the fresh catch was Mahi, we decided to give them a shot and not having to wait for a table! The atmosphere was very nice and we were sitting by the water which is one of the reasons we visit Southport so often for lunch. (still the last place with free parking) Our waitress was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu and just about everything you want in a wait staff. She got our orders perfect and super fast, a great combination! I ordered the Blackened Mahi sandwich with homemade chips, (the only thing I was not totally crazy about) and slaw. The sandwich was to die for. To me what makes a great Mahi sandwich is of coarse the fish, but also the bun used can make or break a great fish sandwich, and this bun choice was excellent! I asked for the Dill Tarter to be on the side, which it was and it was outstanding! I'm not a fan of putting anything on a good fish sandwich other than lettuce, tomato and red onion. If the fish is good, no need for anything else! The Dill Tarter was worth the trip, I used it to dip my homemade chips, I guess for me, the chips were over salted, I think I would have liked them more if they were not so salty. The slaw, OMG was out of this world! It was sweet and had some nice kick to it! To top it off I tried a new beer from the Flying Machine Brewery. (You can read that review on the beer) I got a Tangerine Cream on tap that was so perfect, rich and refreshing, it was perfect with my Mahi sandwich. My wife got the Crab Cake Sandwich with parmesan fries. I tried a few and the Crab Cake and it was very good as well. We found out later from our waitress that Edgewater 122 also owned Fishy Fishy Cafe! Now we know why this place was so good! We've been going to Fishy Fishy for years, but after this great experience it will be hard to choose between the two! As we enjoyed our food and the cool breeze coming from the ICW, there is only one song that comes to mind for me and that is how much we love our life! The song "Love Our Life," goes perfect with this place and our experience! I'd sing that whole album for my food here anytime! Thanks for making our Saturday...
Read moreWe stopped in for a late lunch / early dinner this past Wednesday. We arrived at around 3. They were still using the lunch menu that is very limited. There was not an option for a dinner menu until later in the day. We were hoping for at least a lunch sized entrée (a grilled fresh catch of tuna, grouper, or salmon with a side of veggies or slaw would have been nice).
We settled on salads because we didn't want sandwiches or anything fried which was what most of the lunch menu consisted of.
My wife got the garden salad and found brown lettuce in it. She sent it back and requested it be removed from the bill. I got the Caesar salad, which was average at best. I didn't finish it.
Our drinks was another story. My wife was going to order a glass of wine. She opted not to when she saw that it was $9 to $14. I had to ask our server what they had on draft. She named 4 or 5 selections. I never asked the price, I never do. It's usually about the same where ever I go. When we got the check, I found out that I paid $9 for 2 IPAs that were a bit slow to get to the table.
They were not busy, Our waitress was very nice, but her timing was a bit off the entire time we were there. She even disappeared one point. The bartender brought a mixed drink that my wife ordered, we went ahead and ordered me a second beer from him as my my first one had been empty.
Take aways. This place is very well decorated and gives off a good vibe. It has a very nice outdoor, waterfront atmosphere which got my rating (up) to 3 stars. The limited lunch menu, the poor quality of something as simple as a salad, and the timing of our service almost makes 3 stars seem generous.
We may return to give this place another chance at dinner time just because of it's great atmosphere, vibe, and location. In the event that we do, I will...
Read moreMy husband and I went here on Valentine's Day. We arrived around 2 pm when it was not busy. The hostess said she had reservations coming in at 4 pm and needed to see if she could find us a table that wasn't reserved like it would take us over two hours to eat. So we felt unwelcome from the start and should have left right then. I was disappointed in the menu options but settled on a salad with added steak. My husband ordered fried shrimp. It took a good while for our food to come and my salad had salmon instead of steak when it was brought to the table by someone other than our server. He took it back to the kitchen. My husband started eating so his fried food would not get cold. About 5 minutes later our server came to our table to apologize and said the chef said my steak would take 4 minutes. At least 15 minutes later or longer--my husband had finished eating--my salad and steak were brought to the table. I asked for boxes since my husband had already finished his food. I should have just sent it back. I really expected to be comped or price reduced or offered free dessert or something but no manager ever came to our table and we were charged full price. My steak was overcooked to start with so by the time I brought it home and briefly reheated it, the steak was dry and tough. Not even sure what cut of steak it was but not quality. My husband said his shrimp tasted good but me watching him eat and leaving hungry or sitting there while he watched me eat after he finished was not how we would plan any lunch, must less Valentine's Day. We...
