I ate here for years and years. My earliest memory of Domini was in 1982 at the age of 4, at my father's company picnic in Riverfront Park. That unique taste of bread, good cheese, mayo and freshly roasted beef never leaves you. It was always consistently excellent.
At one point, when I was between jobs, I applied and got hired at Domini. They are good, honest people that are top-notch to work for. Every employee is treated like family. Joe had a heart of gold and Tom was on top of every meticulous detail. They run a tight ship.
After pursuing other employment options and then starting my own business, I still had to have my Domini fix every other month.
Fresh baked bread that they have delivered daily, very high quality meats and cheeses, including in house cooked roast beef. I am a huge sandwich fan, and these are without question the absolute best sandwiches I have ever eaten, not to mention the delicious popcorn that comes with each order.
My own personal favorite sandwich? Try a roast beef (with any cheese) on dark rye with mayo, dijon and horseradish. Order a large sliced pickle and a bag of Lays Chips, then put them both on your sandwich. It's a taste I've never been able to replicate on my own.
This review would be 5 stars but for my last (and final) experience. We were leaving for a long road trip with the kids and had called 2 days in advance to order 2 pounds of rare roast beef and a loaf of dark rye in addition to cheeses, pickles and chips. Then I called the day of pickup to remind Tom that I needed RARE roast beef. After spending more than $70 on our order, we were in Seattle before we made sandwiches. We discovered that our bread was several days old (not moist or fresh) and the 2 pounds of roast beef was not just well done, but mostly crusty ends that he hates to waste. It was disappointing, but honestly the only complaint I can make in 35 years of eating Domini.
Domini is definitely one of the top 10 must try restaurants in Spokane and the single best sandwich shop in...
Read moreI used to frequent dominis quite a bit, but I won’t be going back. The food is fine, but the guy at the cash register is VERY pushy when it comes to tips. Literally (and I do mean literally) the last four times I’ve been there to pick up a my to-go order, the same guy has asked me “HOW MUCH I’d like to leave for a tip.” For my TO-GO order. He also ALWAYS asks this question loudly, and right in front of customers to make sure you’re embarrassed if you decline to tip.
I know how to sign a receipt and how to leave a tip. It’s completey inappropriate for him to put me on the spot in front of everyone and specifically ask HOW MUCH I’d like to leave a tip. Especially for a to-go order of (usually) a single sandwich. And again, he does this literally every time. He’s also done it to every other customer I’ve seen when I’m there (each of whom are embarrassed enough to leave a large tip.). The one time I declined to tip he pretended to forget my popcorn and proceeded to ignore me when I went back to asked for it.
The owners really should know better than to let this practice continue. The guy who does this pretends that he needs to know about the tip ahead of time so he can run the card for the amount including tip (and we can’t tip after.). That may be true, at least for electronic tips, but that just means the owners need to modify their system to figure out a way people can discreetly leave a tip they feel is appropriate.
I’m usually the type to leave a dollar or two in the tip jar, but I don’t like being openly pressured to tip for a to-go order. Honestly, it just feels like...
Read moreBread, cheese, meat. That’s it. It’s a classic style sandwich, in a cool facility, but it’s not worth $12.
The people who enjoy this place are people who enjoy the atmosphere and the general vibe of an old-fashioned style sandwich shop in a trendy downtown. I’ve been all over the USA and tried sandwiches from NYC, Chicago, Seattle, LA, etc and this is something you could make at home with ingredients from a grocery store and a bag of microwaved popcorn.
I wouldn’t leave such a rough review if it wasn’t for the owners being so arrogant and conceited. They act like they have some secret recipe or like the fact they have been in business for so long is a testament to how incredible their food and service is ~ you run a trendy overpriced sandwich shop in a hipster town that has no understanding of good food (Spokane is severely lacking in the food scene). The least you can do is be friendly, and they were rude to me when I visited. See their attitude for yourself - check out how they reply to this and other negative reviews with personal attacks, insults to the reviewer, and outright denial of the customer experience. Completely unprofessional! At Domini Sandwiches, the customer is not always right.
Spokanites have very low standards when it comes to good food, though, so it’s no surprise they are in business still. If it’s trendy and downtown, you could serve popcorn and people would pay money to eat it. Oh wait…
Lol I love how the owner feels the need to make personal attacks against all the people leaving bad reviews. Super...
