An amazingly charming hotel in a great location. The parking situation is not the best; the two lots nearest the hotel are a bit small for the amount of guests they seem to take in, but that appears to just be a problem with downtown Spokane as a whole. The bed was advertised as a queen, but it might have been just a little smaller than that; even if it did lack an inch or two, it was very likely the most comfortable bed I've ever experienced n a hotel room! The bedding was clean, the bed was made as neat and tight as if it had been done by a drill instructor, and the pillows were amazingly soft and comfortable. The TV was a little small, but if you're going to just sit in the room watching TV when you're smack in the middle of downtown, why are you even on vacation?
The interior of the hotel is funky in the best possible way; multiple seating areas, bright and colorful décor. The restaurant in the lower level looked nifty as well, though we didn't visit it.
The standout of our stay, however, was the service; we stayed August 5, 2023, arriving right around 5 o'clock, and the young man working the front desk was polite, friendly, helpful and just the absolute picture of service. When you book with a hotel that isn't one of the major national chains, polite and friendly service really makes or breaks the experience - far too often, you find yourself having strained, awkward or just plain unpleasant interactions with hotel staff that view your stay as an inconvenience. This young man made sure we had the exact opposite experience - the hotel layout is a bit awkward, but his friendly demeanor and welcoming energy ensured that the first impression was inviting and warm rather than off-putting or alienating. It's a shame we didn't catch his name, because we would really love to ensure he gets the proper recognition for just how much of a positive impact he had on our stay. Hopefully, this review goes some way toward ensuring that happens. The rest of the staff we interacted with were also perfectly polite and pleasant, but he was something else!
Overall, this hotel is an amazing find, especially at the price. It will be hard to choose any other location for future trips we might make to Spokane when we know this little gem exists, and I get the feeling that we will find any alternate choices wanting, should...

I recently stayed at the Montvale Hotel in downtown Spokane, and it exceeded expectations in every way. Despite some friends warning us about staying downtown, I found the area to be clean, safe, and not overly busy—we had no issues and felt completely comfortable throughout our visit.
What drew me to this hotel was its charm, character, and rich history, and it delivered on all fronts. If you’re looking for something more unique and atmospheric than a standard chain hotel like the Holiday Inn, this is the place. From the moment we checked in, the customer service was excellent—friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our stay.
The hotel itself is beautifully maintained, with a cozy sitting area on the second floor reserved for guests, and even a boardroom for meetings or small gatherings. Our room featured high ceilings and tall windows that did a good job of keeping street noise out. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom had both a tub and shower. I also appreciated the thoughtful amenities, including a larger-than-average mini fridge, a coffee maker, a spacious closet, and a nice flat-screen TV. My only small complaint: the windows didn’t have blackout curtains, so it was fairly bright —something to keep in mind if you’re sensitive to light.
There’s a great little coffee shop right next door (they actually make their own syrups!) and downstairs you’ll find the Gilded Unicorn, an adorable and atmospheric restaurant with a 15% discount for hotel guests. Unfortunately, they were closed for renovations,. There’s also a saloon-style restaurant with a separate entrance, adding to the building’s historic charm.
The hotel is only about 10 minutes from the airport, and there is limited parking (around 12–15 spots) adjacent to the hotel. If those are full, additional parking is available a couple of blocks away at their sister property.
In all, I’m so glad we chose Montvale. It’s full of charm, has great staff, and offers a one-of-a-kind experience you won’t get at a cookie-cutter chain hotel. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a memorable...
Read morePlunked right in the downtown core directly across from The Fox and adjacent to the Knitting factory, The Montvale is a stunning hotel that has been meticulously maintained as well as possible to preserve the 1899 charm from the year it was built. The building has modern QoL updates such as an elevator and a nice business centre but they don't detract from the huge, sweeping banisters, massive wooden doors on the rooms, an elegant 2nd floor common area and vintage antique furniture everywhere.
We attended during a wedding that was held in the hotel's event area next door that is accessible through the business centre and cuts through into a fabulous lounge area with a massive bar and huge smoking chairs. We were able to see the hotel and the cool events area next door because of the circumstances and even the event area is gorgeous. There are beautiful entryways downstairs to the ballroom and upstairs into the dance hall, "annex" type area. There is a large, well kept wooden staircase between floors with fantastic wrap arounds at the bottom to the accessible bathrooms behind the stairs. Very neat feature.
The actual rooms are decent. We stayed in a king suite with a single king size bed, full bathroom with jetted tub and a table and chair. Lamps and Alarm clock were USB charge capable, lots of plugs in the room and the TV was new and worked well. Neighbors above us on the 3rd floor were creaking up a storm pretty good walking around but that was to be expected with such an old building with older floors. Part of the charm. The bed was very comfortable.
Other guests had "real suites" on the third floor with a separate bedroom for the King bed and a delightful and super cool old Murphy wall bed in the living room area.
The common area on the 2nd floor has a coffee bar with teas, cider, hot chocolates, and coffee. All complimentary.
This was a really cool experience and this place has a lot of charm. We'll stay here again next time we are in Spokane for a show.
It was especially charming due to the holiday decorations and warm,...
