Breadsmith of St. Charles — Restaurant in St. Charles

This was my first time visiting as i am from out of town. Staff was super friendly. They could use a little training on packaging though. I went in first thing in the morning which was great because it got very busy very quick! I purchased 3 loaves of bread. 1 of which the lady insisted on slicing even though I didn't want it sliced. She sliced the 1 loaf, split it in half and bagged them in plastic bags then placed them into a paper bag, she then placed 2 whole loaves of bread on top of the 2 half loaves of bread, which caused the 2 half loaves to squish. I also purchased 2 hot, fresh, just out of the oven cinnamon rolls. The employee that was helping me told me they went fast so I had her snag a couple for me. They were placed into a plastic bag, while hot and steamy. The bag immediatly steamed up. (In case you didn't know, hot bakery items that are placed into a plastic bag get sweaty and mushy) because the rolls were hot, the 2 employees didn't want to put the icing on the cinnamon rolls so they put it on the side.... which was a great idea, but the packaging was a little odd! She put the icing in a giant, loaf style, to go container. Smh. I organized all the bread when I got to the car so the 2 half loaves weren't being crushed by the 2 whole loaves, opened the bag of cinnamon rolls to let all the steam out, and placed the loaf style to go container of icing into the bottom of the 1, "way too small for my purchase" paper bag I was given, so it wouldn't spill all over my rental car. I also experienced the same interaction with the same person when I walked into the shop. She looked miserable and was very rude. I used to shop at the Northbrook location and was excited to see the st charles location. One thing I loved about Breadsmith was that you were offered sample of their featured bread. I asked if they had any scones which is on the menu. She rudely said no and I asked when they would be available. She said when the manager felt like it. I understand the pandemic changed everything but it should not have changed how you are treated when you walk in the door. Unfortunately I have been encountering this more and more. Pleased, surprised by breads (and wonderful cookies! Oh!).

The Apple bread they say is “good for French Toast” - Oh! That is an understatement! Skip adding sweetener to your egg mix, and best french toast ever (my regular thing now).

We didn’t think we’d like the multi-grain - but! - this is so wonderful, toasted, it’s now always in our fridge (has replaced english muffs completely!).

We’ve tried 4 other breads of theirs, and our trouble: we don’t know which is our favorite (French Peasant?!).

Friendly staff, bread that is actually good food and tasty to a surprising level - glad we finally tried Breadsmith.
