We were there Sunday 9/10/2023, our server was Nicholas Y, our check number was #61, and this was the worst restaurant experience we have ever had. Our table of 5 adults was charged a 20% "large party gratuity" before we even got the bill. When it was time to pay, Nicholas held his little device close to his chest, quietly said our order total, we handed him our card, he tapped multiple times on his device, and then turned it around for us to manually type in the tip amount. We initially thought this was odd, since nearly every place uses these handheld devices for ordering and paying, so we have used them a thousand times, and we are usually given an option to tip 10%, 15%, or 20%. Our bill at this point was $37.16 and my husband just typed in $8 (because we are typically generous tippers). As I watched him enter the tip amount, I started running the actual numbers in my head, because all we ordered were buffalo chicken fingers, a side of mac, a side of pasta salad, and 2 sodas. I asked to see the receipt, which we were NOT offered, nor were we allowed to see BEFORE paying! That's when I noticed that we were ALREADY CHARGED a 20% "large party gratuity", tipped and EXTRA 8 DOLLARS ON TOP OF THAT, AND my husband was offered a to-go soda for which Nicholas charged us TWICE for!! As we relayed this information to the rest of our friends, they then noticed they had ALSO DOUBLE TIPPED AND WERE CHARGED TWICE FOR EACH TO-GO SODA!! This is absolutely outrageous! I have worked in the restaurant industry for 10+ years and have NEVER seen a "large party gratuity" added to a TABLE OF 5!! Regardless, we should have been TOLD that the gratuity was already added to our bill, since WE NEVER EVEN GOT TO SEE THE BILL BEFORE PAYING!! Nicholas did not once mention the added gratuity and kept us from seeing the bill before paying. Nicholas tried to get away with an over 40% tip for our ENTIRE PARTY. Its sleezy, sneaky, and just flat out thievery! I don't even have time to get into his actual service, which was poor and he had zero knowledge of the food menu. We are Statesboro natives and have been to Gnat's countless times. The food is subpar at best, the tables and floors are always sticky and disgusting, the wait for tables and food is always extensive, and this experience has just put the nail in the coffin for us ever going back. Her knowledge of the menu was impressive, and she offered insightful recommendations that truly enhanced our meal. I opted for her drink recommendation, and I’m so glad I took her advice—each sip was a delightful!
