I have been frequenting the Leo's at 14 and Van Dyke for several weeks. While I have not had any of their food beyond a few rice pudding, I have been very satisfied.
I stay long hours, several waitress shifts long. 8-10 hours at a time. My initial order is pretty consistent. An orange juice, a hot chocolate, and a thermos of coffee - and if I haven't eaten a rice pudding.
The staff are all very attentive, the place is always clean, and despite being open 24 hours, it does not draw in a crowd of "undesirables".
Because I order so little and take up a booth for so long, I try to make sure and tip well.
The waitresses are intuitive enough to recognize when I'm "In the zone" and don't bother me during these times. When I have relaxed a little, they check on me (I almost always have headphones in) in pseudo sign language and we sync up super quick on if I need something.
I don't use their wifi, I use a portable hotspot, so I can't speak on how their guest Internet is, although there does seem to be an available network.
Having a space to spread out with good light coverage and on demand beverages, including alcohol - somewhere to get away from home and dedicate as "work" hours has been very nice. I don't sleep well and having a 24 hour spot to swing by and bang out a "shift" on my creative works is priceless.
My first interaction was with Jenna, I called ahead and made sure I wouldn't be unwelcome if I just came up here and worked on my computer work and drank coffee. She seemed shocked that I called ahead to verify this was ok, I was a little worried I would be unwelcome for staying so long and not purchasing much.
Stephanie is awesome and cute to boot. Don't mean to make it weird! :)
They make a decent white Russian and a decent pour on a rum and coke. I look 40 easy, but they still card me! Lol. Although, being someone who is more than a casual drinker and less than an alcoholic, I do find it difficult to pay $8 a drink. Don't get me wrong, the drinks are good, but $22 will get me a fifth of my favorite tequila. This is a minor quip as I know they could charge more for their drinks. But I was indeed very surprised to know they had a fully stocked bar, I've never seen a Coney with one, I discussed this with a buddy and he was like "Whattt? They serve drinks?".
I was asked if i wanted to join their rewards program after one of my latest visits, and although I don't normally participate in rewards programs, I think I will take them up on their offer, I think I'm going to be coming here to continue cutting out blocks of my day for "work" and hopefully pump out some of the several thousand pages of creative writing I have in the works.
This will be my go to spot for all the reasons above and more.
Thank you for serving a very underrepresented sector (24 hour dine in service) in sterling heights. Thank you for your welcoming and attentive staff and thank you for giving me personally a place to put words to paper in a...
Read morehad 3 visits in the last 3 weeks. 1st visit was great. Lara was best waitress ever. coneys and fries were perfect and dessert was suprisingly good for a coney place. Naturally we wanted to ride this wave as long as possible. A week later the 2nd visit waitress made only 2 table visits. one to take the order and one to deliver the food and drink. took 30 minutes to deliver drink and food with no follow up visit to check the food or provide more pop and no bill. Saw her at the cash register so we went to check out and found she was consumed with all the take out orders and had no time for us. really? No tip for her. The coneys and fries were no where near as good as the first time. Ok, another week later we went back again only to experience even worse service. waited 10 minutes for the waitress. 3 waitresses and 7 customers. It appeared the mgr bald headed man was taking all their time telling them what had to be cleaned. Later we learned they were filming a commercial the next day. waited 30 minutes for coneys and fries and if I werent so hungry I would have sent them back. Hot dogs were way over cooked (hard and black) and buns were stale. again no where to be found, no followup to see if everything was good, no refills and no bill. Caught up with her at the register and she said she was busy readying the rest for the commercial shoot the next day. I said what about us. the three minutes it would have taken to serve us properly was blown off. she said no one else was complaining. Really? No tip for her either. I usually give 20 to 30% tip as I did the first waitress. I guess the owner doesnt want customers hiring waitstaff like them and the mgr should be fired for not considering customer service. It's only hot dogs and fries not rocket science. Never going back. Kirby coney on 12 and mound...
Read moreExtremely disappointed! Wasn’t going to post this review until my boyfriend woke up with food poisoning from here!! I never expect much from a Coney Island, but this was tough. We joined our friends to make a 4top and within 2 minutes of sitting down I’m asked if I’m ready to order. When I say I’ll need a few the man server says “well sweetheart the whole restaurant can’t wait for you” so I quickly ordered apps, felt extremely uncomfortable and pressured. I ordered a water and a drink from their cocktail menu and the male server was confused and said “oh we’re taking the stupid drinks off the menu” a little shocked, I order a tequila sunrise — never got a water until we asked 3 diff times. Was pressured to give food order again 2-4 minutes after apps were put in and rushed to order. Once food was supposed to come out, everyone’s did except my boyfriend’s. The female server asks if we’re missing anything, to which we reply “a wrap”. She says “oh” and walks away. We see her again 20 minutes later with the wrap, no apology, no explanation. My boyfriend was vomiting all last night and has been having stomach problems since we left. No one else is experiencing this, so it wouldn’t be a contagious illness as we all see each other frequently. I would assume the food was rushed through and not cooked properly considering it was forgotten in the first place — thus food poisoning. My friend and I are both actively servers and understand the industry and the kinks. We still tipped 22% for the worst service we’ve received in a long time. Do not recommend unless you want...
