If you had told me, upon moving to Detroit, Michigan, that I would find not one, but two top-shelf Mexican restaurants that would make me feel nostalgic for the times I lived far closer to the border, I would probably have laughed in your face. Well, at this point I've learned two things: 1) never doubt my spouse when they tell me a place has good mexican because they have an outstanding eye, and 2) Never judge a city by my expectations.
If you are in Detroit, and if you want that nostalgic feel of a sit down in an old mexican cantina, with traditionally made dishes and real Mexican style cooking as opposed to Tex-Mex (don't get me wrong. I like Tex Mex, but there IS a difference.), look no further. For take-out, El Taquiera to the south is my first recommendation, but if you have the time to sit down in the restaurant and want the full experience, come to Mexico City. You will not be disappointed.
I decided to test the restaurant the first time I came. I view Tamales as one of those dishes that you can just sort of tell when they're really doing a good job. I was in heaven from the first bite. The masa was so moist, and the meat perfectly spiced. The offerings that they've had every single time I've come in have been wonderful. Their hot sauces are varied, and their salsa verde is sublime. The seating is just comfortable enough for a short stay, though if you come during peak hours, be ready for it to be kind of packed, because it will be. This place is not a 'best kept secret.' People definitely know it is here, and know how good it is.
There is but one downside. I won't downgrade it from a 5 star, but be aware that parking is in an older lot that's taken some damage over the years. It could use some repaving and cleanup, and because of the popularity of the restaurant, you may have trouble finding a spot. Trust me, though, any frustration is worth it for some of the best Mexican I've had since I was north of...
Read moreIt was cool I guess. Not great so far but not bad. I eat a whole lot of Mexican as nd have been to Mexico for authentic, hole in the wall, great food.
I refer this place when it first opened and I was the only one there at lunch time. The place is pretty much full nowadays.
I really do alleviate that even crowded they didn't blink about wanting to split the (Great Value!) Lunch Enchilada special between Beef and Chicken and also trying red and green sauce.
All were ok. I think the ground beef is just bland uneasiness get mush. Nothing wrong but nothing right at all in any way either. Chicks was unflavored but in chicks and shreds that are still more appetizing than ground beef. Chorizo taco was fine if you haven't had good chorizo meat in a taco. It's just a redish, pungent version of the ground beef mush. Uninspired. Browning on a griddle would go a long way.
Enchilada shells were too stiff, not soft. Just not soaked enough or, cooked enough.
Coke Pop was mixed well and in a large cup. Servers are pretty nice. They're busy though so visits were free and far between.
Nothing to return. Just my taste and preferences in Mex food prep.
I'll go again but only because it's close. Given time I know other places around Warren I'd...
Read moreI started going to this restaurant when they first opened. They struggled for business at first but the prices were decent and their clientele increased over time. I was on 2nd shift and loved to order various ala cart dishes that were very reasonable; it was a cheap lunch for me, then once they became popular, they changed their menu and made eveything into a full blown meal. The Torta sandwich that uses to cost me $5.75 is now $10.99. Aggravated by this change, I stopped going for quite a while, but decided to try them again. I noticed the Torta meal for $10.99 and asked the waitress if I could just order the sandwich Ala carte. She said "you dont want fries" I said No, she said " you just want the sandwich?" I said Yes. I asked, can I order it that way? She said yes. When I went to pay, they still cherged me $10.99 plus tax. I said " I didnt order the combo" the Gal at the ewgister said, your waitress said you didnt want the fries. I said, if I knew you were going to charge me, I would have at least taken them. She reiterated that they dont do Ala Carte orders any more and did not offer any refund for cutting the meal short. I WONT BE...
