Review of City Diner – Raw Eggs and Rude Management
I ordered what sounded like a specialty breakfast item at City Diner — the poached eggs and lox on a croissant Benedict. On paper, it’s an indulgent twist on a classic: flaky croissant, silky smoked salmon, poached eggs, and a drizzle of hollandaise. Done right, it should be rich, savory, and satisfying. Unfortunately, what I was served fell far below that standard and raised real concerns about food safety.
The croissant, which should have been warm and buttery, was soggy from the moment the plate arrived. Instead of providing a crisp, airy base for the Benedict, it collapsed under the weight of the toppings. The lox itself had a decent flavor, but it was overshadowed by the biggest issue on the plate — the eggs.
The poached eggs were completely undercooked. Instead of delicate whites holding a soft yolk, I was met with translucent, gelatinous egg whites that slid across the plate. It was unappetizing to look at and unsafe to eat. Eggs served in this condition carry a risk of foodborne illness such as salmonella, something no diner should ever be comfortable putting in front of a customer.
When I brought this up to the staff, I expected at least an apology or an offer to make things right. Instead, I was brushed off. There was no acknowledgment that the dish was inedible, no offer to replace it with something properly cooked, and no willingness to adjust the bill. I was expected to pay full price for raw eggs on a soggy croissant, even though the meal was untouched. The dismissive attitude was disappointing, but what shocked me most was the complete disregard for food safety.
Restaurants can make mistakes — it happens. But the measure of a good establishment is how they handle those mistakes. At City Diner, there was no accountability, no customer care, and no concern for the basics of safe dining. For a dish as simple and classic as eggs Benedict, it was a total failure.
As a local, I also couldn’t ignore the sense that regulars don’t matter here. The service felt curt, almost rude, as if my concerns weren’t worth their time. That kind of attitude is not only poor hospitality, it’s bad business. Locals are the ones who keep restaurants alive during the off-season, and to dismiss them is short-sighted at best.
I left City Diner without a meal, out the cost of breakfast, and with the impression that this restaurant does not care about quality or its customers. I will not be returning, and I cannot recommend it to anyone.
If you’re in Stuart and craving a breakfast done right, there are plenty of other places that value food safety, hospitality, and their community. Sadly, City Diner is not one of them.
Final verdict: The poached eggs and lox croissant Benedict should have been a highlight, but it was a disaster — raw eggs, soggy croissant, and dismissive service. A diner that ignores food safety and customer satisfaction is...
Read moreWe are Year-round Locals and my husband and I have dined here several times over the years. The ambiance is pretty laid back, old school and fun vibe. Service good, food good we usually enjoy our visit. This time on 8/19/25 at 11:51 when we got our bill, although we appreciate the Military Discount, which of course we still always tip 20% on the original bill, which we did this time more like 22.5%. We felt we were nickeled and dimed on the bill. Our total before the discount was $44.59 after discount $40.14 this included tax and we tipped $10 bucks. Now here is the breakdown: 1 Coffee $3.36 1 Tea $3.36 1 Pancake $4.50 1 Omelet $11.99....hmmmm that omelet egg??? Then no bread, you made money just grits with the meal since we requested yet my husband wanted sausage in omelet $1.50 cheese another $1.50 peppers $.75 onions .75 I got 2 pieces of French toast $8.99 and one side of bacon 3 skinny little pieces $4.99. I purchase a variety of food and make my husband an onion, sausage and cheese omelet each morning around 10:30 which cost me around $1.34 verses this $16.49 I give him a small glass of organic oj and some organic fruit and coffee which maybe total another $1.50 even when I add peppers we are around a $1.50. I know restaurants purchase in bulk and we know coffee and tea are marked up an obscene amount, which cost pennies or nickels not dollars, his coffee was only 1/2 cup the other 1/2 hot water I used a tea bag. The breakdown on my French toast and bacon once again if I made at home under $2 bucks and that's with good sourdough bread, an egg and Jimmy Dean bacon actually good and you can tell you ate a piece of bacon, my 3 tiny pieces looked like they were cut in half. Also, perhaps you could remind some of the servers, that they could bring butter and syrup prior to the meal arriving rather than making the customers wait after their food has arrived. Make no mistake, it is not that we cannot afford a breakfast or any other meal out for that matter, however on this day, I studied the bill longer than usual and I think you could go back to the "drawing board" menu and adjust your prices and I feel quite confident you would still turn a profit! Just a thought. I provide a lot of reviews and most of mine are riddled with 5 and 10 Gold Stars of Praise, however this time I felt I should go a little deeper in...
Read moreThis diner has horrible service and treatment of costumers. We received the wrong type of salmon meal. When we asked the waiter about this and told her how the kids wouldn’t eat the meal, and that we ordered grilled salmon instead of the smoked salmon we received. She was adamant that this was not true and did not attempt right the situation in any type of way. We had not had our food for more than 20 minutes and the waitress took the two wrong orders away, leaving them with nothing while the rest of us already had our food. While waiting for the rest of our party (the father of the two children) the manager of the establishment came to our table and started berating us, almost yelling at us about how our server was an hour past her shift end, and had to leave to go home her kids. Reminding you that the diner is open 24/7 we were not pushing any closing times and we only had our food for 30 minutes. This was in no way our fault for their bad scheduling management, and the manager was so aggressive, she even made one of girls sitting at our table start to cry. We were in no way loud or obnoxious and didn’t cause any trouble other than the wrong orders which was not even an inconvenience to them since they didn’t attempt to fix it. Once the manager realized how unprofessional she was acting once she saw her crying, she offered to take off one of the wrong orders and replace it with what we actually ordered. Leaving us to pay for the other wrong order and a new meal for the second child. We even got overcharged 10$ for two children chocolate milks which were extremely tiny, and the waiter even admitted that she refuses to sell them since they are so over priced but did not bother warn us of the price, which was not on the menu.
In conclusion, I would not recommend dining here unless you like being yelled at by management, ripped off and receiving the wrong food. I especially don’t recommend this place to those who are timid and can’t handle being harassed by...
