Bolillo is a staple in the Mexican/Latin community. Since moving, we travel 20-30 minutes to visit the location on Main Street. The parking there is horrible and the establishment itself extremely crowded, but worth it. We were dining close by for my besties birthday and she mentioned they recently opened this location on Hwy 6 which was supposed to be huge in comparison to the location on Main Street. And who am I to say no to the birthday girl? The parking lot is huge as it's shared with other businesses. It's well lit. Right before you walk in, there's an outdoor seating area with a few tables and chairs. We walked in and I was marveled by the size of the place, decor and cleanliness. Everywhere we looked, sweet bread galore! The first area is cakes. You can purchase cakes which are already made or place a custom order. Right to the left is where you grab a tray and a pair of tongs. There's all kinds of sweet bread, something for everyone. From the cochinito, to muffins, to the infamous conchas. The bolillos were fresh! Baked on site and tossed into a pit for customers to pick. There's a station for coffee, hot chocolate, and Mexican hot chocolate. A tortilla station working to get fresh tortillas out. There are refrigerators that offer a variety of Mexican drinks, juice, milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, eggs, and cheese. There's another small area that sells the infamous Abuelita Chocolate. There's another station serving tamales, aguas frescas and champurrado. The kids enjoyed their Horchata and we opted for warm champurrado. I will say I was a bit disappointed with the consistency of the champurrado as it was a little thick for my preference, but I still finished it. We enjoyed shopping here as it was not shoulder to shoulder, tons of space to walk and didn't feel rushed. What better way to end the night than with some "pan dulce" and...

Fresh new place! Friendly faces welcoming to all and constantly at work to bring out fresh items. It was lightly crowded as I attended during the grand opening.

The staff is absolutely wonderful! Friendly, open to communicate, quick to their work. Love them!

I adore how sorted everything was. Trays and tongs ready, numerous displays with variety of breads and treats. As well as a separate part that has cakes, absolutely beautiful!

As for taste however, the breads I purchased were alright at most. They’re not the greatest but they’re absolutely not bad in any shape or form. Edit (11/21/23): I wanted to put more exacts for the sake of clarity. -During this time, I only gave 3 items a try to get a good grasp of how this bakery fairs. I have edited my review with days passed by and trying more of their products. Out of all the goods I have tried so far— mainly baked goods, the only one that tasted off were the Conchas. The texture is absolutely as you’d expect, I usually have them with coffee as they’d best compliment. At the time of purchase, it felt a touch stale. I’ll be returning again to try more to see if it was just a bad batch, so please take this review with a grain of salt. One of the images shows the products I have purchased (Champurrado not included in image)

The TASTE update: They’re absolutely wonderful, I can’t list one piece of bad bread that I had in my hand. Each item are a good mix of sweet, very delicate to eat into and feel fresh even as its been days since then. I’d personally visit this location every now and then, but for a first impression, I’m absolutely blown away with what this store has.

All this for only 19.50 in my hand too— A very nice price...

Houston Classic Sweet, Savory & Always Delicious at El Bolillo Bakery!

El Bolillo Bakery never misses. From the moment you step inside, you’re hit with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet treats that feels like home. Whether you’re popping in early morning or late afternoon, there’s always something fresh and amazing calling your name.

Their bolillos are legendary perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. The sweet breads, empanadas, cakes and especially the tres leches and pineapple cake are standouts. The variety is impressive: from super sweet items to lighter, less sugary breads, they offer something for every taste.

What I love is that this bakery feels like a neighborhood institution. Prices are very reasonable walk in with $10‑$15 and walk out with enough bread, pastries, or cakes to delight everyone.

Customer service is warm and efficient; yes, it can get busy, but the staff keep things moving and you always feel welcome. Clean, well‑organized space, and you can tell people here take pride in what they do.

If you want authentic Mexican bakery goodness in Houston, El Bolillo is a must. Whether for breakfast con café, a sweet treat to share, or a cake for something special—it delivers every time. Highly recommend!

I ordered a cake for my daughters birthday. As we cut and try the cake, all my guest spit out the cake claiming it tasted like soap!! I take a taste and sure enough it tasted so bitter and absolutely not edible!! We took it back and the lady said that is how the cake should taste because of the bright color and they advise their customers about the taste. Not me they never told me that. I get it, cakes have food dye. We always ordered colored cakes for a kids birthday. Either they added way too much food coloring, used the wrong dye or not sure what it was but it was so bad that our daughters birthday got ruined. Everything the icing touched got stained worst than permanent marker that was so hard to come out. Even after washing multiple times. My metal kitchen sink and knife are stained. Thats how I know the dye was so strong. I've never had a cake with food dyes that tasted like that. The cake was beautiful but awful taste on whipped icing. We were all excited to try this cake and got very disappointed. I know they wouldn't sell colorful kids cake if they "warned customers" about the taste before purchase or even continously sell pigmented bitter tasting cakes. They messed up on this one.
