Over the last few weeks, the distinct branding and beautiful mixed drinks of Kohiko have been all over my Instagram feed. The opportunity to try Japanese single country-of-origin coffee in Houston was more than enough to grab my attention, but I was initially skeptical. Is this yet another Instagramable gimmick or is this truly a rare and unique experience that lives up to the hype? I finally had an opportunity to make the trek across town to give it a try and could not have had a better experience.
I arrived around 7 am., close to the opening time. I had to park a little ways away from the door but at this hour there were plenty of spots open. The environment was pretty quiet with soft music and the sound of the baristas working. The staff was extremely friendly and one of the owners, Nick, greeted us and introduced himself as well as explained some of the personal sentimental reasons behind a few of the decor choices, which gave the place a nice personal touch. After looking at the menu I landed on an espresso for $3.50 and the moshi moshi for $6.75, which I felt was extremely fairly priced for specialty coffee in general, but also specifically for the quality of the coffee I was served here.
My moshi moshi came out first and it was stunningly delicious. The flavor of banana was very pronounced but not overpowering or too sweet and it made for a very satisfying and unique drink. My espresso took a while to come out and Nick apologized profusely, but I was able to watch them try to pull the shot from where I was sitting and I actually really appreciate that they took the time to dial in the espresso shot properly. When it finally came out I was blown away by the cleanliness and flavor profile of the shot. I was blown away by the flavor and I enjoyed it immensely. Imagine my surprise when Nick passed over a complimentary EVEN MORE DIALED second cup of espresso that had a delightful amount of body and sweetness. The complimentary cup was not at all necessary but it was a very nice gesture and was not taken for granted. The shots had distinct notes of spiciness and a hint of cardamom and left me very caffeinated and extremely satisfied. Even my girlfriend who very strongly dislikes coffee loved her drink, which is saying a lot!
Kohiko coffee house is worth the hype and then some and because of the incredible friendliness of the owner and staff and the quality of the coffee they are serving it is one of my favorite specialty coffee shops I have ever tried. It may be a trek for those of us that live in the loop but it is well worth it. I'm already trying to figure out when I can go again and I'm confident you will feel...

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the staff, who made me feel incredibly welcome. Their kindness and helpfulness set the tone for my entire visit.
The atmosphere at Kohiko is calm, peaceful, and aesthetically pleasing. The store is immaculately clean, which only enhances the overall experience. My favorite spot was the bar area – it’s beautifully designed, spacious, and allows for a personal connection with the staff. Sitting at the bar, I had the chance to chat with the workers and learn more about the coffee shop, which made my visit even more enjoyable.
I tried the iced Matcha latte, unsweetened, and it was fantastic. The high-quality Matcha was evident in every sip. I also got the Moshi Moshi hot with oat milk, which was equally delicious. Both drinks exceeded my expectations.
I visited a little after they opened and had the place to myself for a while, which I loved. The intimate and calming environment was perfect for a quiet morning. Around 9 AM, it started to get busier, but the serene vibe remained intact.
Kohiko Coffee Shop is definitely worth the hype. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to return for another...
