Shipley's in general has being going downhill for many years now. Ever since I can remember (30+yes now), when we'd get glazed donuts in the morning, there were always some leftover that we'd snack on later that day or evening. By then they'd have a very distinct & slightly unpleasant taste & smell...not bad enuf not to eat tho. By the following morning, they'd have a wet appearance & the unpleasant taste & smell made them inedible IMO. It seemed like some kind of chemical breakdown that happens with sugar and/or yeast. A few yrs ago I started noticing that their glazed donuts had that weird nasty day old taste even when they were hot right out of the fryer. I swear they must be refrying day old donuts. Or using glaze made the day before. Something isn't right, that's for sure. The Shipley's donuts that people knew & loved? You're more likely to find a unicorn. I'm not sure their famous glazed donuts still even exist (unless I just so happen to keep missing whichever day they actually have fresh donuts...doubtful). When your hot glazed donuts don't get eaten & end up in the trashcan in this house (like they did after my recent visit to this Shipleys location), there's something seriously wrong with those donuts. The kolaches have gone downhill too, although not as drastically as the glazed donuts. When I asked the employee if they had hot glazed, she proceeded to tell me which hours & days they always have hot glazed. Not very useful when your hot glazed donuts aren't even fresh. I agree with the other reviewer who said it seemed like they were soaked in old grease. Worst. Donut. Ever. Pathetic & tragic that this is what this...
Read moreShipley Do-Nuts is a Texas symbol. Go ahead and mention Krispy Kreme or Dunkin to Texans and they'll be quick to lay you know. . that's not a real donut lol. I love coming to Shipley when I come into town for two reasons:
What I love about their donuts is that they are yeast donuts. According to their website, "The donut that started it all was a glazed yeast donut. This donut has a light interior with a slightly crispy outside and smothered in the traditional glaze or a variety of other toppings including icing, sprinkles, nuts, coconut, and cinnamon-sugar. When eating one of our yeast donuts, you can imagine the sensation of biting into a cloud."
The cloud aspect, is true. When biting into a Shipley donut, you question "what Krispy Kreme?".
Now the kolaches. To be honest, I never had one until I came to Texas. I didn't even know what one was until my boyfriend introduced them to me a couple years ago. Everyone I go, I get the same one. The jalapeño and cheese one. Amazing every time.
Our order when my boyfriend and I are together are the same. 3 glazed 3 kolaches 2 bottles...
Read moreI always typically go to this location i drive an extra 20 mins specifically this location. I always ask for hot fresh donuts and usually wait for them as well. This morning, I asked the cashier went to the “fresh” donuts. You could tell she was preoccupied with something else, she rushed me through. Instead of the another cashiers who are kind and I usually ask how they are doing. Immediately after I paid she walked away to go into her purse. I touched the donuts outside the bag and they were cold. I asked if I could have hot fresh donuts. She said they were hot and fresh and continued going through her purse. I asked if there was anyway I could wait for hot fresh donuts to come out and when the next batch was going out. She huffed and said they were fresh and warm. She clearly didn’t want to talk. Sadly i wont be coming back anytime soon. I have never experienced this with the prior cashiers over the years. Very sad, usually they always have...
