Big Walnut Grill — Restaurant in Sunbury

My Mom and I came in this past Saturday, May 31, 2025 for lunch at 11:30 AM. This is the second great review on restaurants in a week! I don't write reviews unless they are earned and deserved, this one is beyond deserved!! From the moment we walked in until we left was an excellent experience. The hostess, I did not catch her name, pleasant, welcoming, smiling and accommodating. We felt very welcomed and appreciated her kindness. Chris, our server, showed how much she valued the patrons as much as she valued her career choice. She greeted us promptly and with what one would expect from a server. She listened to my concerns and when she didn't know the answers, she said so and immediately said she would find out. This is when the GM, Brian, became involved and he was as exceptional as Chris and the hostess. They made us feel truly appreciated and cared about through our whole dining experience. The food was excellent, Sweet Potato Tater Tots shouldn't be ignored, we ordered them without sugar and cinnamon. There are vegan options that they are willing to make the experience great. The whole experience only made us want to return, much sooner than later. I made a living waiting tables and my expectations set the bar very high, this goes for my Mom as well. They far exceeded that bar and this can only be achieved by a great staff that honestly cares about their work ethic, their establishment and most importantly the guests. I know this is a long review, but people need to know that customer service hasn't fallen by the wayside for the all mighty dollar. Was in the area , looking for a place to accommodate my dairy allergy. Called and spoke to manager “ Bryan “ He was super kind and assured me he absolutely hooked me up. We arrived an hour later, party of 4 with 2 dairy allergies , Bryan met us at our table shook my hand made eye contact , answered my questions, validated my concerns , went to the kitchen to read labels , came back with options ( offered to hand make some chicken strips for my 6 year old ) He ended up with a burger , gf, and applesauce I got a bacon burger with onion straws and avocado. My husband and dad both got the fish and chips . The plate presentation on all meals was phenomenal! He hand delivered the allergy meals with his gloved hands. The fish was crispy and not greasy at all , my husband said it’s probably the best fish he’s ever had ! My burger was cooked perfectly , the fries were great , avocado fresh and lettuce was cold crisp and not even slightly brown. We got an appetizer of chips and salsa, the salsa was great , I didn’t love the chips but they weren’t bad. The waitress was super kind and attentive. Hostess greeted us quickly when we arrived . Our booth had a rip in the seat which was rather uncomfortable, but only because I was wearing shorts and it rubbed my leg. The service is the worst and so is the food. We went there when it first opened and it took 35 minutes before we received any service then it took another 35 minutes before we received our food. The worst part about it there were no more than 20 people. The staff just was too busy telling stories to each other than to take care of each other. After all that we didn't go back for over a year. Then just the other week the same thing but worst. We told the waitress that it was out 1st time back after over a year and the story what happened before. She told us that this would not happened with her, but it did. She went on break then it was 25 minutes before I even received my hamburger and my 1st drink .My wife received her drink but the wrong hamburger, so a different waitress said I will take that hamburger back and have them make you a new one. So my wife has no meal and I have mine which was so greasy that I had to use a fork. Again no waitress around and no refills. I had to ask for a different waitress to get us our refill. Then they bring my wife's hamburger out after I have finished my dinner. We will never go back again. It's a shame that for this to be one of the only places to walk to in a one mile radius to sit down to eat be so bad. We need a real a family restaurant in Sunbury that gives service and great food that don't go out...
