The food was just okay. I dont think it was worth the money. KFC is essentially on par with Ezell's in terms of quality, but way more affordable than Ezell's. I got 4 piece fried chicken(they put 5 pieces in instead of 4, which I do appreciate very much) with two rolls, and mashed potatoes with gravy. My partner got 6 piece spicy chicken tenders, also with a roll and mashed potatoes and gravy. We also got a side of regular crinkle cut fries. The mashed potatoes were delicious, and I would definitely order them again on their own. They were similar to KFC's version, except way better. By far the best part of my meal. The fries were very, very bland. That's on me for not getting the Cajun seasoning fries. But the fried chicken was pretty mediocre, and the spicy chicken tenders were Not Spicy At All. They were seasoned, but not spicy. If you're going to charge more for a spicy version of a food, it should actually be spicy. I can't handle spiciness at ALL, and even to me it wasn't remotely spicy. We walked back in to have our order fixed because we thought they accidentally swapped regular tenders with the spicy ones, but no. They informed us that "Ezell's just isn't spicy like that" and that we did in fact have the "spicy" tenders that were originally ordered. I can't put into words how non-spicy this dish was. Don't call it spicy if it's not at least medium spicy.
If we come here again, it'll probably just be to try the Cajun fries and have more of the mashed potatoes and gravy. Not the chicken, which in mine and my partner's opinion, is seriously lacking.
I'm very disappointed w Ezell's. We were so excited to check out a local Southern/Black food restaurant, and were hoping for a lot more flavor and spice. It's not terrible food, but overall it's not really any better than mass produced places like KFC. Blandness is not what I expect from Southern/Black food.
I seldom leave negative reviews of restaurants, but the "spicy" chicken being completely lacking in spicyness really bothered me and my partner, to the point that the whole meal felt like a disappointment. Especially after hearing this place get hyped up as good and authentic...
Read moreI ordered the 4-piece combo with double cajun fries, delivered through Doordash.
I got all dark meat because it's usually a lot juicier than the breast or tenders, but today's order was still a bit dry for my taste. I understand that it has probably been prepared for a while (being lunchtime on a Sunday, you don't want to fall behind), and I'd rather it be a bit dry than undercooked, so that's not a big deal.
I ordered my chicken "spicy," but, honestly, I just wasn't feeling it. There's a good possibility I burned my tastebuds beyond recognition last year when I broke down in Nashville and used the time to sample every Nashville hot chicken joint I could find, but I still expected a bit more than I got here. Maybe it's a regional preference? I dunno.
Getting french fries delivered usually results in soggy texture, which chronic Doordash customers like me eventually adjust to. So, imagine my surprise when I bit into my first fries and, lo and behold, they were kind of crisp!! I imagine they'd still be exponentially better, fresh at the restaurant, but they were fantastic, even after being boxed up and taken for a ride!! Crispy and perfectly seasoned!! Your fine neighbors in Idaho would be proud!!
Finally, though, were the rolls. Most places treat rolls as an afterthought. They get them premade in a bag and toss them, willy nilly, in with orders. These rolls, however, were warm, soft, sweet, yeasty, buttery, and all-around the reason we, as a species, are addicted to carbs. After the first bite, I began devouring the rest like competing predators were circling to challenge me for them. Superb!!
Next time I'm back in the area, I plan on trying Ezell's again (maybe with some hot sauce for my stunted tastebuds?)!! Although it wasn't a complete 5-star experience this time, I get the indications that this was just a slightly-off day for an otherwise-fantastic establishment. I look...
Read moreI absolutely fell in love with Ezell's because of their delectable gizzards. How I adore some well seasoned and properly greased gizzards. My first two visits were wonderful. Polite staff and helpful to this Ezell's newbie. Upon my 3rd time ordering, my rather large order for a family of seven was quite wrong and my jumbo sides were terrible mashed taters rather than the two jumbo potato salad I had ordered. I called in my next order and asked them to double check since my last order didn't go so well. They attempted to make it right by giving me two small sides of potato salad. I realize they weren't jumbo like I originally ordered and paid for but I was thankful for the thought. So why three stars? I called multiple times today for a period of several minutes and all calls went to VM. When someone finally answered, she continued to talk to someone else. And she re-peated the wrong order back, twice. When that was finally figured out, after waiting some more for her to finish her conversation with someone else, it was time for me to order my highly anticipated gizzards. I was then told she had just run out. Like, the moment I ordered them. Weird. I asked why and she said because they had just sold 3lbs and the manager had forgotten to order more. So I was willing to drive to find my fair gizzards. I inquired of other locations and she said didn't know and had to look on the ezells bag. The closest was Seattle which my husband had already passed. Farewell, my lovely gizzards. I'm off to scour Google for a new gizzards spot and it looks like we are going back to Popeyes. I really like Ezells but with what they charge for their product, service and and availability as well as a correct order, they should be on point and their...
