Following PT, it was off to find breakfast. After being unable to find parking at another restaurant, it was back to being on a breakfast venture. Plan B did not disappoint. Detours can make for the best adventures.
Marcia’s Silver Spoon Cafe opened in 1988 in a building erected in 1929. The building may be old but the restaurant was very clean, and well loved. The owner of the original restaurant, which preceded it, also co-owned The Top of the Ocean. Anyone who lived in Tacoma, prior to the mid-70’s, which is when it was destroyed by fire, should have vivid memories of that beautiful waterfront structure and mirror lined ballroom.
The outside is rather nondescript, but the inside takes you right back to the 50’s style diners. We were greeted warmly as we entered and seated immediately. Coffee and water was served, along with menus. Pictures with labels of some of the meals served, are posted on the west wall. A handwritten set of FAQ’s is posted by the kitchen for those needing additional assistance when it comes to differentiating some of the menu items.
After perusing both sides of the menu, and asking for recommendations, we ordered. Ray had the chicken fried steak omelette with hash browns. I chose the two meat and cheese omelette, and sprang extra for the country potatoes, which can come with peppers and onions. I decided plain potatoes were fine by me. Wheat toast for Ray and sourdough toast for me, rounded out our breakfast order.
Our meals arrived quickly and did not disappoint!!! Ray’s chicken fried steak omelette, was huge, well loaded with large chunks of meat, and perfectly seasoned gravy. The hash browns were crispy, without being overdone, or soggy, which we both hate.
I ordered sausage and bacon as the meat choices for my omelette and it was loaded!!! The bacon was the real deal and not the chunked up mystery meat stuff which sometimes comes in bacon omelettes. I don’t know how many sausage patties were chunked up in my omelette, but the cook didn’t skimp on them. It also contained white and green onions, which complemented my omelette, and didn’t bite back, and a cheddar and Colby cheese mixture. My country potatoes were a healthy serving. I was offered onions and peppers, but wasn’t in the mood, so I declined. While my parrot is a vegetable eater, he also prefers his potatoes “naked”. He will get some tomorrow when I eat the rest of my breakfast.
While the outside of the building may look run down, and unkempt, the inside, atmosphere and food are anything but that. There was a lot of laughter and camaraderie, making our meal enjoyable. This hidden gem should not be overlooked. First impressions can be misleading. Don’t bypass the opportunity for an excellent meal which will not disappoint. This is one place where we will...
Read more*The pancakes are to die for and huge, they actually fill the whole plate 🫠 their food is excellent! Very cozy place to come in to ! I few downfalls: It’s a tiny restaurant, you feel like you’re invading other people, space and privacy, surroundings are a little too close The waitresses are nice, the only thing is that the restaurant in general is so small you can actually hear other peoples conversations, and waitresses like to have their own personal conversations of their own personal Opinions, gossip, problems, and own personal life… you can literally hear everything at this place and the
waitresses need to keep it professional keep their personal comments to their selves because as customers we come to enjoy ourselves and relax not to hear someone else’s drama regardless of what it is or it’s about, the bathroom seemed semi clean, but overall this restaurant looks like it needs a lot of work or love They need to upgrade big time and make sure they have appropriate space for the kitchen bathroom and table accessories that the waitresses or servers are using to serve tables like coffee and so on, everything seems very crowded, even the walls of the restaurant look old and dirty not appropriate look for quality food, despite all , their food is actually really good Lastly, the waitresses need to make sure they’re dressed up as a professional waitress, not in casual clothes that you would wear at home to work , Prices are little bit higher than the medium range , I guess their food is worth it But waitresses, and overall they need to treat your customers with dignity, and respect, watch their tone , This is reflected, in their staff and the restaurant looks overall … Management is always a reflection of the business And this business looks like they have potential just needs a few Twix here and there, and definitely a dignified makeover Really focus on quality customer service and caring personality and a touch of Love and personal interest in your job, how you treat your customers,
too busy gossiping instead of refilling a cup of coffee sometimes you get the point… I bit disappointing, specially, with the pleasant atmosphere and clean atmosphere you expect from a restaurant where you’re being served
Looks like they have been in business for a long time , 30 years plus You will always rejoice and feel proud of yourself, in doing a great job and giving it your best by no doubt, it will be reflected always And maybe start with simple cosmetics to care a little bit more for your restaurant like painting the walls and so, but we would really appreciate a beter place to come down and eat and enjoy ourselves
Thank you...
Read moreThis location and this greasy spoon diner was a five star, but until recently in the past few months, the service inside while dining has gone downhill I understand that this is a very busy popular place and the reason why it’s busy and popular is because the food are in large portions, and it is reasonably priced and it actually is consistently good the thing that is disappointing is that every single time that I am served by the waitress with a squeaky, high-pitched voice she really pisses me off, so I stopped dining in and start doing takeout orders because there’s been a few times where I’ve driven to this location to bring my friends that never experienced this place in Tacoma to give them more business and to be turned around because the lady with a high-pitched squeaky voice cannot run the small Less than 20 seat, diner by herself, so we’ve been turned around because they did not have additional waitress who had to go home because she sprained her ankle and the other time the kitchen closed early because they ran out of food that is unacceptable. Regardless, if you are a mom and pop restaurant. Now on to the takeout orders, I decided that I was gonna call in and just pick up the food but when I called today, the lady with the squeaky, high-pitched voice was rude over the phone telling me “well I can’t take your order now but if you wanna come down here Then place an order because I can’t take the order right now over the phone” who says something like that? that is unprofessional and unheard of. How is it going to take you the same amount of time that if I come down there in person to purchase my meal will be the same exact amount of time that it would be for me for you to take my order over the phone that’s the reason why I order over the phone so that it is ready when I come down there. I don’t wanna wait additional 30 something minutes in my car while waiting for my food to be prepared. This place is starting to get less and less for me so every time I see the lady with a high-pitched, squeaky voice I’ll just turn around or when I call I’ll just hang up and call again and wait for the other two ladies who are actually really nice and professional ….. Steer for caution from...
