Read moreThis place was absolutely excellent in all regards! The food, the service, the beverages, and the ambiance were all just what I was hoping for out of my experience. After reading all the other reviews, the choice was clear. I tried the Green Tea Matcha Milk Tea, and my dining partner and I also shared her first Ramune Soda, Original Flavor, a staple for any Ramen House. The Matcha Milk tea was delicious. During our experience, we ate the Spicy Edamame, Takoyaki, Spicy Oil Tonkotsu Ramen, and Black Garlic Miso Ramen. I am happy to report not one drop of broth nor one single ramen noodle was left in the end. All of the food was delectable: the flavor of the spicy edamame was delicate, well constructed, and just spicy enough; while Takoyaki is not usually my go to for appetizers, we saw such good reviews that my dining partner insisted we try it and the good reviews were spot on for this dish as well; finally, both ramen dishes were so perfect that I couldn’t choose a favorite. Clearly they used great ingredients in designing these two savory meals. My personal favorite part was the seasoned egg cooked perfectly and perfectly accompanying the rich broth flavor. The noodles were also cooked just right for both flavor profiles and the chashu pork was sliced thin enough that I didn’t have to soak my beard with broth while enjoying it. That being said, I couldn’t get enough, and will definitely be back. The dining and greeting staff were all friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. This restaurant truly deserves the five-star review, and I would recommend it to anyone with a palette for a well constructed ramen. Even though I just finished my meal, I cannot wait to return again to try more of their dishes. I wish I had taken pictures when the food first came out, but the aroma was so overtaking that I only remembered to photograph about three quarters of the way through the ramen. Any lover of food should come visit Michi Ramen! Thank you to the staff for such a wonderful...
Read moreMy relationship with Ramen is strange. In my 20s I watched the Ramen scene from the movie Tampopo and it stuck with me for it's hilarity and seriousness. But it would not be for another 25 years that I actually ate Ramen for the first time during our visit to Tokyo. I had my first bowl Kyushu Jangara Ramen Harajuku and it was an absolutely life changing event. The egg had a cheese like texture with a subtle saltiness that penetrated to the center of the egg and it the bowl was served with pork belly - not chashu style. The dance of spies and textures was just mind blowing and I finished every drop.
I could not finish the Ramen I had at Michi. The main problem is that the bamboo had a stank that had spread to the entire bowl. I would have to guess they use canned bamboo in a brine of some kind and left the bamboo in the broth all day and the bamboo stank got deep into the broth. It was disgusting. The pork was definitely not pork belly - pork belly is basically bacon, but to to be fair Michi never claims their chashu is from pork belly. But a lean cut of pork leaves much to be desired - it was dry and didn't have much punch other than the brazing. The egg was nowhere close to what I had in Tokyo.
To be as fair as I can to Michi I tried some Ramen in New York after Michi which was amazing and I tried a 2nd place in Tampa which had a similar bamboo problem but it wasn't bad enough to overpower the whole broth (seems like they added the bamboo just before serving). Michi is the only one I couldn't...
