We ate at Kai last night (November 2020) and they just opened for outdoor seating, which was nice to actually eat at the restaurant. They give you menus for Tairyo Sushi as well as Kai so you can order from both!
The food was excellent! My wife and I agreed that the sushi was the best we've had on island over the past 3 years we've lived here. It was fresh and the taste was marvelous. The gyoza was decent, not the best I've had but it was good. Seemed to have a vegetable filling verse a meat filling. We also ordered takoyaki, which were very good and had a small piece of octopus inside. When I asked what flavor the takoyaki was, she said octopus balls, which made it sound gross. The octopus is a very small piece and had a subtle taste, not gross at all (I am picky about certain seafoods).
The Pink Dragon sushi roll was delicious, as was the California roll but our favorite was the Philadelphia Roll! I had the hot soba tempura as well, which came with a bowl of soba noodles with seaweed (not too strong though) and two fried tempura shrimp, with fried sweet potato piece, pepper, and acorn squash.
To boot, I had two Asahi draft beers and my wife had a tea, our total bill was $68 and the add a 10% gratuity.
Highly recommend trying out Kai! Not sure if the photos are attached to my review, but I posted the entire menu, which is lengthy. I did not post the menu for Tairyo, seems a little more casual and smaller dishes that you...
Read more3 for average everything. By far the worst sashimi I've had in a long time. I've had better at gas stations. I got meal set C, assorted tempura. Every set except the tuna poke comes with sashimi, as well as miso soup and rice(edit: and ice cream). I'm not sure if the pickled veg comes with all sets as well but it came with mine. Cucumber was barely pickled, was pretty bad, the rest (cabbage and carrots) was fine. Rice was on the money, neither hard or mushy, tempura sufficiently crisp. One suggestion for the ice cream is if is in a separate freezer, try increasing the temperature so it's not as hard. I let it sit 5 minutes below attempting to eat it but it was still hard as a rock. Thankfully they gave me a metal spoon as anything plastic would've broken. Halfway in I grew tired of scooping it, gave up and brought it back with me. Despite the average review, not a bad place and I would get it again PROVIDED that they let me swap out the sashimi - maybe for a mini chawanmushi, a skewer, or 2-3 gyoza...
Read moreMy husband and I come here often for dinner and we’re always happy with the service and food. However, today’s dinner was exceptionally delicious. We just got back from Osaka, so I was wondering if I’d still be wowed by the food — I was! The salmon especially was cooked to perfection in that the skin was crispy but the meat was tender and juicy. I also love that the sashimi is very fresh just like in Japan. The last thing I wanted to mention is that I enjoy the TV channels they have on like sumo matches. They seem to be Japanese channels and really make the entire experience feel authentic....
