I’m one of those people whose favorite thing ever is a good pie. Fancy, homemade, out of a box, you name it. But if you’re a true pie connoisseur like myself then you know when you have a pie as amazing as Melisa’s that you've truly found someplace special. This is my absolute go to for pies in DFW, the pies are not only beautiful but lovingly handcrafted and have that baked with love taste you would get from a loved ones cooking. For the last 5 years no matter where or how far i've moved I make sure to stop by Melisa whenever I need my comforting mini pie (or whole pie, we’ve all had those weeks hahaha). It’s one of those things that make your day, week, month a little bit brighter and a perfect way to treat yourself while also supporting an amazing business and an amazing woman. If you’ve never met Melisa she truly is a ray of sunshine and always looking out for everyone around her, even complete strangers. Definitely follow her antics on their facebook plus get the inside scoop on new flavors or specialties. If Cake is on the menu that day… RUN, don’t walk. She’s just as good at cake as pie! LOL.
Remember Y’all, Pie is more than just a seasonal treat and is amazing year round! Nothing beats a keylime or lemon pie chilled in the fridge for summer time, or a warm dutch apple pie with a scoop of ice cream in the spring (Or really any season for this one omg so yum), or instead of a boring, generic grocery store birthday cake get a pie that people will not stop talking about! Or if you’re like me, just a few minis to store for those rainy days where you need a slice of comfort.
I’ve tried all flavors of her pie and my top 5 are as follows. Mocha Peppermint Ganache Cheesecake, this is a Christmas must! If you love peppermint or andes mints you’ll love this. Not so minty that its tooth pasty either!
Salted caramel Dutch apple pie. Y’alll the caramel… the fresh apples… that crust… UNREAL. This ain’t your grandma's apple pie but you’ll wish it was after a slice of this bad boy. Sorry grandma!
3.Cherry pie. Such an amazing classic, 100% slice of USA right here.
Coconut/Banana pie, this is my family's favorite and we couldn’t decide which is better so we always get both! Peanut butter fudge pie. A birthday favorite in our house, if you love reeses this is your pie! Not too peanut-y, not too sweet. Just perfection. Pro tip, stick in the freezer for a bit for a cooling summertime treat OR chop lightly and blend into some ice cream for an amazing homemade shake (Y’all this is deadly!).
Honorable mentions: Millionaire pie, truly a vintage treasure. Your older loved ones will thank you for bringing this one to the table, and you’ll thank them after giving it a try! It looks like one of those crazy 60s dishes you’d see in a magazine but y’all give it a chance. SO fruity and refreshing! Another family favorite.
Wedding cake slice with raspberry coulis/filling - When this is in stock I take orders from all my family members and get a ton of slices to distribute to them. It's that good y’all!
Thank you for reading my long a** review, yes i really am this passionate about pie, but even more-so when it’s such a deserving family run small business. We love you MeLisa...
Read moreI visited MeLisa the Pie Lady today with the expectation of finding sweet potato pies, but unfortunately, she doesn’t sell them. That was completely fine—the shop itself is very charming, and I appreciated the cozy, well-thought-out aesthetic. Since I was already there, I decided to try a different pie instead.
Before purchasing, the lady working there made a comment that caught me off guard. She said, “You know this isn’t an area with a lot of AA people, so you won’t really find any sweet potato pies,” and she prefaced the statement by saying she didn’t mean it to sound prejudiced. At the time, I let her know I didn’t take offense. However, after reading some of the other reviews and seeing how paying customers were addressed in responses, I’m left wondering why it was even brought up. In my opinion, such remarks—regardless of intent—can be unnecessary and alienating, especially in a diverse society where inclusivity should be the standard.
As for the pie I did purchase (pecan), I was honestly disappointed. It lacked flavor, the filling was underwhelming, and the crust crumbled, it split down the middle upon removing it from the plastic container. For the price, I expected much better quality.
Would I return? Probably not. I do believe as well as she knows, she has a loyal customer base in that area and that her pies may be more appealing to their preferences. However, as someone in my line of work who values equity, social justice, and respectful communication in all spaces—including small businesses—this experience left me with mixed feelings. I drove pretty far to patronize the business so a replacement wouldn’t suffice, either way.
Update: 6/27/25 in response to MeLisa— 1. simply take it as constructive criticism. 2. research intent vs impact. 3. This further proves my review regarding cultural insensitivity. 4. Based on your response, my review stands as is and substantiates the aforementioned concerns with your view, which alienates/excludes...
Read moreI was never a cake person, so for our wedding we decided on pie as the dessert. Prior to our original wedding date, my wife and I tried over 15 pie locations (pie shops, grocery stores, specialty bakeries, home chefs), and no one came close to MeLisa's handmade pies.
Since our wedding was pushed, we visited MeLisa's shop frequently to get dessert for holiday gatherings and gifts as people could not get enough of her fresh handmade pies. We went with the Chess pie as our "wedding cake" and an assortment of the other flavors for guests to choose from. My personal favorites are cherry and pecan, but you can't go wrong here. If you get tired of the same flavor, MeLisa works on seasonal pies too.
Besides all the pictures and rave reviews, the other reason you need to come and support this business is for MeLisa and her husband. They are extremely kind and hardworking individuals. Prior to our initial wedding, MeLisa stayed in constant contact with me to work on smaller versions of her pies. I cannot imagine the time she must have spent to ensure the ratios worked on the smaller versions. She also checked up purely to see if we were able to get married over the course of the next year. You truly can taste and see the difference that their passion and hard work contributes...
