I'm honestly a bit surprised that Mouthful Eatery made Yelp's top 100 list. Firstly, the staff are great – very kind and accommodating. The cooks are on top of each order and serve food quickly. But that leads to my main gripe – the dishes are just not great. I tried several entrées, including pork and steak sandwiches and a chicken bowl. In each case, the meat was far from tender and very little flavor came through. While I'm not Peruvian, and thus not the final judge on Peruvian food, I have had fantastic Peruvian dishes in the past. It's usually some of the most flavorful food one can find. The sauces and marinades at Mouthful just didn't shine through in my experience, and the bread was...not good. If you like the taste of unseasoned meat and aren't a fan of sauces, you may enjoy the food here. The atmosphere also isn't conducive to having meaningful conversations over a meal, due to the limited indoor seating and location on a very busy street. Lastly, something that is universally unappealing are the unclean restrooms. Without getting too graphic, the bathroom hadn't been cleaned in a while (per the chart found on the door). There were many unwelcome sights and smells in there. Given Mouthful's reputation and price point, each of these drawbacks left me quite surprised. It's safe to say that I will not...
Read moreI came for lunch on 10/9/15 and OMG I finally found a place for lemonade!! That's the biggest reason why I came and tried it. I love lemonade and this is probably the best lemonade I have tried in so cal! The mint cucumber lemonade is damn heavenly delicious!!! ( I would give this place 5 stars for the lemonade). Oh man and don't get me started with their cookies! The soft, sweet, and yummy dulce de leche cookies are amazing.
Staff was really great here. Really nice, helpful and very attentive. They came over refilled my glass of lemonade when they saw I was done with it (2.00 refill). I would definitely come back.
Food: I ordered the lomo saltado sandwich (13.00). It was good but I expected way more for the price and boast this place has. I have tried authentic Peruvian lomo saltado and this sandwich doesn't live up to it sorry. It was lacking flavor. Next I'll try the pulled pork.
Parking: they have street parking in front, very small parking lot out back. You may find parking near park right next to their parking structure but when I went it was full. PS they have picnic tables out back where their parking is.
Overall I would recommend this place and I will definitely be coming back for lemonade...
Read moreThis is a nice casual cafe with a Latin twist to some of the menu items, but I don't completely understand the naming convention here.
The menu is a touch eclectic and inviting. They consist of the choice of construction. A bowl or a sandwich are your main options. Entrees are posted on the right side of the board.
The flavors are not bold but are sophisticated. A first visit for lunch proved to be quite delightful with a nice Chicken Sandwich that was not dry. Their Fish Tacos could receive a re-do for it was very overly fried. Yucca fries were okay but does show their Peruvian influence. The Fried Zucchini were probably the star and an excellent side or starter.
This cafe boasts a very approachable atmosphere and an excellent fast-casual dining experience. Their pricing is certainly not fast casual. You may expect to spend $30 per person on a nice lunch. Entrees are on a different scale...
