At first, the female owner was nice and helpful. I described that I wanted 24 cupcakes in a Harry Potter design (red & gold, blue & bronze, green & silver, yellow & black). She said that she could do a Sunday pick up as long as it was between 10am-12pm to which I agreed would be no problem. She also asked me to text her a picture of the design and let me know it would be $5 extra to do it like the picture.
I go to the bakery next day and I am greeted by her husband. He takes my order for 12 Oreo cupcakes & 12 vanilla cupcakes and charges me $10 extra after discussing with his wife. He then asks me that if I would instead be able to pick up Saturday night “but if I was not able to then he would understand and it would not be a problem to pick up on Sunday morning”. I agree since he gives me the option and fork out the extra $5 even though this is not what the owner had specified during text despite discussing that I wanted two dozen cupcakes from the beginning.
Saturday night comes and the owner calls me with an attitude telling me that they will not be open Sunday because it’s her daughter’s birthday (which should have been mentioned when we spoke on the phone of her unavailability and should have not made it seem like it was optional at the bakery). Obviously I go, especially since I had already paid for it, and to my surprise the cupcakes look NOTHING like what I ordered. Instead of Harry Potter colors, I get red & black, green & white, and blue & white (they only one on point was yellow & black). She then tells me that she copied the photo and I tell her no she did not. I explain that the colors were supposed to be as described above and she replies that she does not have the colors to make silver and bronze (again something that was not transparent at the initial point of contact). She pulls up the photo and realizes that it is in fact supposed to be red & yellow (gold) and goes to fix the mistake. She ends up coming back with sloppy frosting work and leftover black on the red cupcakes.
I also ask her which ones were the Oreo cupcakes to which she assures me that it was the red & yellow/yellow & black batch. I have since tried both batches of cupcakes and guess what… they were all vanilla.
As a fellow Latina, I really wanted to support this business but this was just unnecessary drama that I had to go through and ironically pay for. Paid $66 for something I not order and mediocre cupcakes.
Moral of the story: Lack of transparency Lack of...
Read moreLet me start off with that I really wanted to support this local bakery. I was excited to find a local bakery I could frequent. I came in on July 13th with a simple request, a Kuromi birthday cake. Pink/black with flowers. I sent the perfect reference photo(s) in my email to Jay & re-confirmed the date and time and details. Jay & I even joked about how we hate the stigma of last minute orders, because I was ordering this 12 days prior to my birthday. I paid in full in advance, left a nice tip in advance, and we had agreed for the 25th at noon.
My husband and I show up, albeit 15 mins early thinking well it must be ready by now. We find her assistant there who explains that she had us down for 2PM not noon, and that the fondant topper had NOT been done yet! She was gone because she took on a last minute order and prioritized that above her scheduled prepaid orders! So begrudgingly we went home waiting for a call when the cake was ready. Two hours pass, and we had enough. We drove back to the bakery to find the front doors locked.
Jay must’ve heard us because she came upfront to let us in. She had rushed to finish the topper and when it came out my heart just sank. It wasn't even Kuromi. It came out to be a derpy, chubby My Melody. She had kept calling it Hello Kitty for some reason. We had reservations we changed around due to the timeframe. After we took the cake I received a call that she had made a Kuromi headpiece to “switch out” but after this ordeal my husband was NOT wanting to go back and frankly I was no longer confident in her skills after witnessing this. This is very obviously sloppy fondant work that was rushed last minute.
While I appreciate that the owner did do the right thing and fully refunded us and asked us to take the cake regardless (that is the only reason why it’s 2 stars for handling this mess correctly), its the lack of professionalism in regards to prioritizing last minute orders over prepaid ones, not honoring a timeframe and not being able to double check reference photos. I sincerely hope this owner learns from her mistakes & criticisms to ensure this does not happen to another customer ever again. This is not the cake I wanted in terms of design for $65 freaking dollars and I was sincerely disappointed. The cake inside was correct but very sweet. She has lost my business, I don’t think I’ll ever come back. This is my experience with Good Cake Bakery. Be aware if you order any...
