Kona Grill in Portland

Not gonna lie: I was hesitant about trying the new Kona Grill in Bridgeport Village. It's a chain, and I had heard from friends and family that the prices were high for the food quality and quantity. So I was happily surprised when my friends and I went for happy hour and had a wonderful experience! This review is strictly for the happy hour menu, ambiance, and service, as I can't speak to their lunch or dinner menu. Food ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ambiance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is probably one of the better happy hour menus I have tried anywhere for a very long time. It offers a LOT of different food and drinks at three price levels: $3, $6, and $9. The $9 food is supposed to be the same portion as the regular menu but at a lower price, whereas the $3 and $6 happy hour food items are smaller portions than the regular lunch and dinner menu. Here's what we ordered: • Chicken Satay (one skewer) $3 • Kona Sliders (two) $6 • Macadamia Popcorn Chicken $6 • Potstickers (three) $6 • BBQ Chicken Flatbread $6 • Chicken and Shrimp Lettuce Wraps $9 • Avocado Egg Roll $9 • Butter Cake (off regular dessert menu) We also enjoyed some cocktails and wine from the happy hour menu. The skinny margarita was fine -- not amazing -- but I did enjoy their house Pinot Noir. Hits: the Kona Sliders, BBQ Chicken Flatbread, and the Avocado Egg Roll were our faves. Flavorful, nicely cooked, and perfect to share. The chicken satay was dry, flavorless, and only had a small swoosh of peanut sauce. It really needs a full little cup of peanut sauce for dipping. The chicken and shrimp lettuce wraps had a nice flavor and we liked that they were served with bibb lettuce, but the filling was dry. The Macadamia Popcorn Chicken was tasty, but my friends didn't find the macadamia nut flavor to come through enough. I thought they were tasty and I could taste the macadamia nut, so if you like popcorn chicken, I say give it a try. I like the dipping sauce for this one too. The Avocado Egg Roll came with a super delicious dipping sauce. Bottle that stuff - we loved this dish! Perhaps the best part of our happy hour experience was the service. TERRON was the best! We also had a couple of managers stop by, and different servers dropping off food -- everyone was super friendly and helpful. If you've been here before through previous restaurant iterations, the ambiance will feel familiar. I'd say it's a fun spot for a night out with friends, which would probably describe most of the diners around us. It would also be a fun date night spot. The place is lively and loud, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic spot, Kona Grill probably isn't your best bet. But I love it for happy hour and will definitely be back!

I want to be clear that the staff here are awesome! I felt bad eating somewhere on TG but we were traveling and they were open, hopefully they’re paid well and everyone tips extra . This was a splurge for us, so I had higher hopes for the food. I had a good time and I did enjoy both the espresso martini and the wine that I had. Wait staff were all perfect, lots of managers around ensuring folks were taken care of. But I think the managers could help out the waitstaff a little more when they’re super busy, they were a little frazzled. I have a feeling the back of the house couldn’t quite keep up with all the orders coming in though so I commend them for getting everything out in a reasonable time. So why the three star review? The prices do not match the food. There’s price, quality and quantity and I understand you can only have two your way in this case the all three were mediocre lol. Prices insanely high, the steaks were not high quality ,although I will say they were cooked mostly to the correct temp, maybe a little more well done than the medium rare we requested but with as busy as they were I actually wasn’t expecting perfect doneness. The servings were small. The surf & turf you do get a full meal because you end up with veggies and some seafood but no potatoes. My son got the lobster roll which had the tiniest pieces of lobster. The non surf steak options you only get potatoes. No veggies! There is no table bread either. The potatoes and butter were flavorful and I enjoyed them. The filet wasn’t necessarily bad but it wasn’t worth $50… I’m grateful to the folks that work here, it’s the corporation I have “beef” with lol. Most restaurants offer one starch and one veggie along with table bread. This almost seemed like an upscale Applebees but with less food. The photos are the food we got vs the photo on their website (we altered the lobster roll by choice) note the difference in the steak density. A wagyu rib eye should still have some marbling. I’ve never seen a rib eye this thin before. I understand the weight is taken before cooking but I highly doubt this was a 12 oz cut. The green beans were very good luckily my son shares them with me. Portland has so many options, for a holiday not as many but the rest of the time I can’t see choosing this restaurant again. $200 bill for three people and only one of us had alcoholic beverages.

DO NOT COME HERE! This has been one of my favorite responses to visit for their happy hour, to the point I even left them a 5 star review in the past and had to delete. This was the worst service I’ve ever experienced as a paid customer. We first walk in, and find out it’s not happy hour because it’s Saturday, and we look at the regular menu and see the prices are pretty steep but we decide to try it anyway because maybe it’s worth it? (It’s not) the server takes our drinks and I from the beginning ask for a Coke Zero, she brings back the other drinks, and no Coke zero, I ask her again for a Coke Zero, she comes back to clear glasses, no Coke Zero, so I ask her again, I ASKED HER FOUR TIMES. Then we got fed up, because we look at the time, and saw that we had been there over an hour and I still haven’t got my Coke zero and no food has hit the table…. The kids were restless because they were so hungry. And all they had was a jones soda, which the waitress never explained was not apart of their kids meal, but pushed the drinks anyway for the kids….( just wait for that), we told the waitress we were pretty much over the wait, and she was just so pushy about it’s almost ready blah blah blah blah, she went to the back and started grabbing whatever was ready, and when I say, I ordered a $40 dollar pasta and paid 8 dollars to add chicken, and this hit the table, I laughed. It was luke warm, the sauce was completely broken, the chicken was diced chicken that was cooked in the sauce with no seasoning at all! IT WAS THE WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER PAID FOR! We ate it because at this point we were so hungry because we walked in ready to eat from an already long day…And then my brother in law ordered the seasonal ravioli for 32 dollars and only 4 raviolis came out and it did not look good at all. He told the waitress, he doesn’t want it, and would like to take it off and to send it back, and he just wanted to finish what we received and leave, because the place was a joke, the waitress, proceeded to say!!! No I want you to keep this and I won’t charge you for this, but I’ll have the kitchen make you more, he was like not it’s ok, HE DIDNT WANT IT, but again the waitress was so horribly pushy, and made him keep it and brought out a bigger bowl of ravilolis, then she said they are going the bring us dessert blah blah blah, I didn’t want any dessert I wanted to leave but we stood because others wanted it, the desserts were fine, but not worth what we went through, on top of all this, the manager never came over to speak to us, completely avoided our table, the waitress was making all these false promises. We finally got the check, and guess what was on it, THE 32 DOLLAR RAVIOLI, that the waitress repeatedly said would be removed, we never asked about the 40 dollar past and expected to pay for the disgusting meal, we then look more at the bill and see the jones sodas WERE $9 dollars!! You have to been joking!!! We asked the waitress what was going on with the sodas and the ravioli, and she gave some sorry excuse about the ravioli!! Saying they will give us voucher for next time, THERE WILL NEVER BE A NEXT TIME! So she removed the sodas and kept the ravioli, and my brother just paid for his meal, and was like I don’t want to be here anymore, this place wasted our time because they were in town from bend for the weekend and had to deal with this sorry place for almost two hours… DONT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!! Go to Sinju or Choza, they know what they are doing there and not charging ridiculous prices for the absolute mid food I have...

This is my second visit here. My first visit was about a month after it opened and I personally would not have given it a second chance after that experience which included spotty service and overpriced less than mediocre food, the only bright spot being the server’s upbeat attitude despite being obviously overwhelmed, however, I was taking my dad to lunch for his birthday and this is where he chose. We dined in on Tuesday 4/8 at 1pm. The restaurant had only one dining section and the bar open. No hostess. We waited several minutes to finally be greeted by an over extended and stressed out server. She sat us in the bar and when we asked to be seated in the dining room, the server did oblige, but it was obvious that she did not want to take on another table (not her fault, she was the only server there in the only open dining section). The service was again spotty - waiting to place orders, receive refills and requests to be met as she was over tabled. This is actually the same server that served me the first time I dined here. I again gave her grace because of her upbeat attitude despite being obviously overworked and under supported. We ordered the avocado egg roll appetizer, and I figured the Asian salad would be a safe bet, adding macadamia nut chicken (one of their “signature” items), my dad ordered the sea bass. I had a bottled sparkling water and he had an iced tea. Our bill came to $100. I can’t speak for the sea bass, but the avocado roll and Asian salad were unbelievably flavorless, lacking very simple ingredients to make them pop, and the chicken was dry, under seasoned and over fried. Presentation was also very basic, not exciting whatsoever. I did not finish my half of the appetizer or the salad, only taking a few bites of each for the sake of my guest and not wanting to ruin the occasion with complaint. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and get the same but better tasting items for less at California Pizza Kitchen next door. To be honest, I haven’t eaten at CPK in 20 years (before I could afford the finer things in life), however, I recently ate there for a friend’s birthday (because I let her chose). I actually ordered those exact two items (safe bets) and did finish and enjoy them for what they were, as priced and expected. I have previously worked in the restaurant industry from quick service to fine dining and have dined at some pretty amazing restaurants having previously lived in Scottsdale, AZ as well as regularly traveling to LA and NYC. I honestly don’t get Kona Grill. Don’t try to pretend to be something that you aren’t. Don’t charge steakhouse prices for Red Robin quality food. Don’t cut corners by letting quality of food and service slip while also expecting someone to pay $100 for lunch in a...
