Cabo Fresh - Stony Brook — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

I am not exaggerating when I tell you this is the first negative review I’ve left in my ENTIRE life. Left plenty of positives but don’t believe in unnecessary negativity. So this is a first.

Having spent the past month studying for the bar exam, I decided to take the day off for my birthday to go the movies with my family. Though there are plenty of movie theaters closer (some even nicer), I drive over 30 minutes to Stony Brook so that I could get Cabo before it.

I come here whenever I am in the area and genuinely enjoy the food. It’s expensive (they charge extra for tortillas if you get a bowl, queso, etc.) but I usually have no problem paying for it, especially when they are a mom and pop shop.

When it came time to put the meat in the bowl this time around, I am not speaking in hyperbole when they put precisely 1 fork full of pork in it. The employee grab the tongs almost as if he was removing a splinter, not serving food. After having agreed to pay extra for two other things already, when I asked if they were putting more pork, the gentleman said it would be an extra $2.50.

Asking to speak to a manager, a gentleman who witnessed the whole thing unfold came over. After voicing my frustration and explaining that I’ve been here plenty of times and drive 30 minutes out of the way to come here, he yesed me to death, with no offer to remedy the situation. I was not looking for any freebie and truly would have not even accepted one, I just wanted what I paid for. I then left without any food extremely upset that I just drove all the way to Stony Brook for no reason.

Walking out of the place while leaving the food right at the register is another first for me, but this was so egregious that it caused me (a gentleman with 8 years restaurant experience both private and corporate) to do something I would often criticize others for doing so.

I am embarrassed that not only have I recommended this place to others but that I suggested it was worth driving out of the way for. Now with egg on my face, I attempt to correct my error of recommendation, and advise people DO NOT EAT HERE unless you don’t mind paying significantly more than a chipotle or moe’s for a bowl of rice with management and employees who are there only to...

I walked in, and immediately was transported about 3100 miles away. I felt warm air on my face, sand in between my toes, which was weird because I was wearing shoes, and the sound of calm waters breaking against the shore. I was there. I was in Cabo. The smell of the grill rang out to me and told me to get the burrito. Filled to the brim with steak, rice, cheese, and mango, my mouth was watering as I was given my burrito. When I bit in everything had exploded, the warm air had turned to ferocious winds and the sand between my toes felt like glass being stuck into my foot. Still, nothing could tear me away from my burrito. The calmness of the water broke and the waves turned violent, it felt as though the waves were attacking the shore in an attempt to remove me from this heavenly stuffed tortilla. I was determined to finish. To keep my Paradise. As I finish the burrito, hurricane forces being enacted upon me, I stare up into the sky, clouds now swirling in a circle above me, and I yell out, "I WILL NOT BE DEPRIVED!". This place is phenomenal! I go to the movies right by here all the time but I’ve never bothered trying Cabo. Until… one of my friends and I were about to go watch a movie and it was national taco day AND taco Tuesday, so naturally, we made the decision to go right next door to try out their tacos!

The tacos were amazing! I had the steak and the carnitas tacos and I also had a mango madness smoothie and everything tasted amazing! My friend really enjoyed her tacos too!

Everyone working there was kind and helpful and quick to answer any questions we had! There was a remarkable young man working there named Justin who went above and beyond and truly put the icing on the cake on our experience at this Cabo Fresh location. He was cheerful, friendly, funny, and made sure we had all we needed and that we were well taken care of! Justin deserves some recognition and perhaps a raise👀 ??

I’ll definitely be returning to this location for some food before I go watch...
