I am going to be honest, Colombo Spice really surprised me, and this is how.
I normally start my reviews talking about the food, but this one will be started off with the atmosphere/service. Colombo Spice was our last resort for some South Indian food to eat quickly because we were in a rush. The restaurant is very tiny, cramped, and dirty. The minimal space makes it even hotter during the summer months. Our table had specks of dirt on it, and I was instantly disgusted with the look of the place. The bathrooms are not great either. The service is very slow, and for such a small, low crowded restaurant, it took at least twenty minutes for our food to arrive.
Moving on, we ordered Plain Idli, Masala and Butter Dosas, Veg Kottu, and Mango Lassi. Let me tell you, for the amount of time we waited for this food to arrive, we wanted to expect something great, but kept our expectations low because of the ambience. However, this is where we were shocked! The food was amazing! The idlis were so soft and fluffy, the butter dosa was indeed buttery, the masala dosa had a scrumptious filling, both were crispy and fresh, the chutneys tasted homemade, and the saambaar was my favorite! The Veg Kottu was so different from other restaurants in a good way. I did not expect all of this food to taste this delicious. It was better than the South Indian food you get at all of the bigger South Indian chain restaurants. The only thing I didn’t like was the Mango Lassi which barely tasted like mango and had a texture that was too thin/runny. The dosas and idlis were served in paper plates with banana leaves on top which was so nice!
All in all, I loved the food here, but the atmosphere, nearly not as much. I would not mind revisiting if changes are made. The portions are pretty good, and same...
Read moreAs I sat down in this restaurant on one of the most comfortable chairs that’s ever blessed my bottom, The aromas hit me like a sledgehammer of flavour. I knew this was going to be the most incredible culinary experience I had ever experienced, before I even laid my eyes on the food. As an Indian, I had always known that Sri Lanka has the most amazing food but this truly cut through the border and transported me right into the kitchen of a Sri Lankan family. I ordered a masala dosa and patiently waited for the divine morsel to grace my table. It came swiftly and with grace. I tore off a piece with my hand and was immediately entranced by the God given blessing that had just entered my mouth. I felt as if I was sitting right in the middle of a street in Colombo with a piece of dosa in my mouth. I have never tasted anything like this before and would like to extend my blessings and my thanks from the bottom of my heart to the chef for feeding me such an amazing dish. If you do not come here at least once in your life, you have not lived much of a...
