I would first like to say this restaurant is so awesome that we raved about it to friends and social media to try it. But unfortunately our experience this time was not great. I hope the owner reads this review so this issue does not occur again. Mistakes can happen but it can also be fixed.
We called the restaurant on February 7, 2023 (Wednesday night) at 8:15 p.m to order take out. We knew it closed at 9 so found it weird they weren’t answering. Called 3 more times and no answer.
We arrived around 8:23 p.m. Completely empty inside and a young lady sweeping. Asked her are you guys closed to which she replied no. Informed her that we called a couple times and nobody answered. To which she responded that they do not take calls an hour before closing. She also added that they’re only doing take out. If she asked she would know we were calling her to do a take out. So we told her we are here for take out. After that conversation she went back to sweeping while we’ve been standing in front of the register to order. She didn’t say anything to us like give me a minute to finish sweeping. So we’re just silently waiting and watching her thinking maybe another person will be taking our order. Maybe 5 minutes or so she finished up sweeping and took our order. I’m not sure if she was aggravated with us that we came in when she was ready to go home or was waiting for the cook. Will never know since she never said anything to us.
I’d like to give advice that when a customer is ready to order you don’t continue sweeping and taking your time. Even a polite “sorry give me a minute to finish up sweeping” would’ve made it better. Also to be apologetic towards customers even if you are not when informing them about not taking calls an hour before closing. It also doesn’t make any sense. I can walk in to place a take out an hour or even 30 minutes but you guys cannot answer the phone to let the customer know that we have to come in person?
The service was a bummer but we were so hungry and was still excited to eat the food. When we opened our containers the quantity amount was smaller. And the quality didn’t look the same either. The short ribs needed more time on the grill and it didn’t even have a little bit of char. I feel like the cook either wasn’t happy with us or just didn’t care enough to cook properly. If it’s the same cook from the date 01/30( shout out to the chef/cook) in the afternoon, then I’m shocked because the food did not look or taste the same.
Review for last time was 5⭐️ but this time it’s 0⭐️ We thought this place was going to be our go to place. Hopefully it...
Read moreSo, I was born and raised on Maui, moved to Tulsa after 40 years on island, 'cause milk was like $8 at the grocery store. I've prob eaten literally thousands of plate lunches in my day, and have indeed tried the other Hawaiian place in BA(it's just OK) Friend told me this place opened by the mall, I had to check it out!
I went ahead and ordered 4 items for myself, because everything sounded good. My reviews on a classic Hawaii Can/No Can scale:
Spam Musubis - CAN: a bit heavy on rice for my taste, but the flavors were there. They included teri sauce on the side, and with that drizzled on...yes!
Medium Loco Moco - NO CAN: unfortunately, this was a frozen shaped patty that was chewy(it broke my plastic fork trying to cut it) the gravy was oily, and there was like a tiny 1/3 scoop of rice barely there. Maybe an off day for the cooks, but this just wasn't it.
Medium mix plate - CAN: the flavors were mean(really good), the beef and chicken were tender. There was only 1 pieces kalbi in there, which I thought was kinda odd, but it had a solid, real local Hawaiian flavor.
Mini Kalua Pig - CAN: the pork was tender, the cabbage held the salt flavor. Little bit dry, but that's OK, this plate was solid, salt and smoke flavor was right on.
Sides - CAN: the Mac Salad was really good, like top 5 I've eaten in my life. Simple, but perfectly rationed, perfectly cooked. Just awesome. The Teri Sauce, I want to put it on everything. Maybe a bit sweet for Tulsa tastes, but it's the piece that really brought me home. Rice was cooked right, a little wetter than most Asian preparations - exactly how it should be for Hawaiian food.....there just wasn't enough of it. Every plate had like half the rice I would have expected, throwing off my normal per-bite ratio. In my mind, a regular/medium plate should have at least 1 scoop rice, and these were all far less. All good tho, that's a personal preference.
Overall, I will go back, there's a couple other things there I gotta check out, the prices are decent (cheaper than plate lunches back in HI for sure), and besides the Loco Moco that day, everything was solid('solid' being high praise in HI!). Service was quick and really friendly. Glad to see there's a real taste of Hawaii available for Tulsans to try, and way happy that I can get at real versions of the food I...
Read moreI have been following the reviews for F’S Hawaiian Food as it operated as a food truck. Rave reviews from Californians, Hawaiians (experts) and all the cool kids. I have stayed away because, 1. I was skeptical about how good the food really was and 2. I don’t do food trucks. I’m glad to see that they took the wheels off. Time to try it.
But first, disclosure… I don’t know “come here from sic them” about Hawaiian food. I have been to the new chain restaurant that recently opened in Owasso. I didn’t care for the plain white rice, the tasteless macaroni salad or the sweet sticky chicken. The Spam Musubi is a different story. I could eat a shoe box full of those things. With that said and as with most all of my reviews, the rating is simply an indicator of how well I liked the food and service. Not to be taken as an indication of how authentic food is. I don’t know.
They have a large menu. I wanted to stay away from the sweet sticky stuff. I know I don’t like it. My wife and I ordered two of the specialty plates. I had the #5 F's Hawaiian Spicy Chicken and my wife had the #12 Garlic Shrimp. The Hawaiian Spicy Chicken is a big serving of dark meat chicken grilled to a nice caramelized finish, with pepper and onion, on a bed of fresh shredded cabbage. It did have the spice. Excellent. My wife’s grilled shrimp was cooked just right, with onion, served on a bed of chopped cabbage and mixed with roasted garlic bits. There was no doubt that she enjoyed the meal. The macaroni salad had a great flavor. I normally would avoid the stuff. Both of these are meals are recommended.
The other meal that looks delicious is the #9. Loco Moco, and of course the Spam Musubi. The service is adequate. It is a minimal food truck/fast food style of operation. Order at the counter, your food is delivered to the table. The food is served in to-go...
