On a warm afternoon in Vacaville, we decided to stop by Hokulia Shave Ice at 155 Browns Valley Parkway, and it turned out to be the perfect way to cool off. This little spot offers an incredible variety of flavors, and just browsing the menu was an adventure in itself. You can stick with classics or get creative by blending flavors, which makes each visit unique.

Joshua chose Bubblegum and Cherry, a bright and fun combination that tasted as good as it looked. I went with Pineapple topped with Li-Hing Powder, which was both refreshing and delightfully tangy. The ice was finely shaved, soft, and fluffy—just the way authentic shave ice should be—allowing the flavors to soak in perfectly with every bite.

Prices are very reasonable, and you can choose between a “short board” or a “long board.” We opted for the short board, which was more than enough to satisfy. Service was quick and efficient, with the attendant preparing orders with speed while still being friendly.

I stopped by Hokusai Shaved Ice in Vacaville and had a great experience. The place is super clean with plenty of seating and great for hanging out without feeling crowded. The menu was really clear and easy to follow, which made ordering quick. I went with the Longboard size and picked one of their premix flavors called Unicorn Kiss a very fun combo of pink bubble gum, blue Hawaii and mango. The man taking the order was not wearing a mask and kept coughing openly and didn’t cover his mouth at all. He kept wiping his runny nose up and down his arm while both taking our order and giving it as well. The ice is stored behind him with the case open. We just threw our orders away. Even if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic this was disgusting and showed that they weren’t at all hygienic or obeying basic kitchen safety standards.
