With these old ears I had heard mysterious whisperings of a doughnut place that also had good hamburgers. Perhaps a fracture in the space time continuum, an oxymoron of the best kind, a crux of the world where good hamburgers exist surprisingly right next to their exact opposites.
This eternal search for an excellent hamburger, like survivors in the desert searching for an oasis or climbing mountain slopes in search of the wise, holy, transcendent burger. Could it be here nestled amongst the donuts? A hidden treasure in plain sight?
I am hesitant, a bit nervous as I sit down and prepare to take my first bite. I arranged all of my taste buds in a row like an advancing battalion and shove that savory burger into my mouth. My very first thought, was that I had hit pay dirt! Where the burgers and donuts stand side-by-side, exact opposites, yet both sublime!
And then I took that fateful second bite and the world twisted on its axis, where compasses spin and one loses all sense of direction. That second bite was not good. Perhaps the saltiest burger I have ever had. Each bite compounding in my mouth, salt upon salt. I ate half and had to throw the other half away.
The onion rings were OK, nothing really to write home about, but solid. And of course the drinks were canned from the cooler, a shortcut that always irritates me. Restaurants do this I think is a way to avoid responsibility, to save themselves time. I would prefer an iced tea made fresh during the day or fountain drinks where I can mix them until they are perfect.
I hate to say this as it sounds dismissive, but judging from that one burger, perhaps they should stay in their lane. I’m afraid it was a disappointment.
After the disheartening burger, I took a moment and perused their donut section. It was impressive and I took some home to share with my wife. Now there, is the core of this business. It is the foundation they rest on, the siren song that draws in the sailors.
The donuts were wonderful. Large and flavorful, some full of magic and others dipped in the sea of dreams. Their ice cream section looked tremendous, a panoply of colors and flavors that seemed to never end. Where acolytes could come on their holy quest many times before trying them all.
OK, maybe I got them on a bad day, I am not particularly sensitive to salt put that burger is not something I would order again. My rating for this earnest and deserving establishment would have been lower except that they excel in that core, donut adventure.
I can understand the desire to expand and compete against the well-heeled voodoo donut shop that rudely opened just a block away, obviously a ruthless marketing tactic. Voodoo is a fad and will go on and do what it will do. But places like Angels Donuts will live on carried by tradition and a grateful community.
Beyond that, it was great to see the kids pondering over their ice cream choices and bonding with their parents via delicious memories. It’s the kind of place that had I gone to so many years back in my youth that it would still live on...

I have that Angel's Donuts, across Vancouver Mall (behind a sushi place, by Ross) had good burgers and fries.
That is an understatement.
Best Burger combination!! 😋
My daughter ordered the bacon cheeseburger combo with an extra beef patty. You can even choose what type of cheese you want. What-what?!?
She chose fries as her side. They were crisp and delicious crinkle fries
AND you pick your drink (a bottle) from the fridge. She picked Diet Coke.
I chose the burger with bacon combo. I don't like cheese on my burger. I know... unique. 😄
I chose onion rings for my side. They were big and delicious!!
And a bottle of Coca-Cola.
For dessert, we had donuts. Always yummy.
The two burger combination portions were generous.
Big enough for the three of us (me, my daughter, and my toddler granddaughter).
We still had some fries, onion rings, a portion of our burgers, and a portion of my cinnamon twist, to take home.
I usually go to the Angel's Donuts in Hazel Dell (Hwy. 99 & NE 99th St. across from Burgerville). But they don't serve burgers there.
I will try the Angel's Donuts in East Vancouver next (near SE 164th). My daughter has been there. She said the donuts are good there too.
The three locations (East Vanciuver, by the mall, and Hazel Dell) are all owned independently, but the owners are all related.
The one in Hazel Dell is owned by Victor "Angel". His younger sister Victoria works there sometimes.
Their parents own the one in East Vancouver.
And their uncle owns the one by the mall.
I'm not related. I just asked Victoria if the three locations were owned by the same owner. She told me how they're all related.
Victoria (and the other workers) are always so nice to my 4-year-old granddaughter Isabel, when we go to Angel's Donuts in Hazel Dell.
If you love burgers, give Angel's Donuts by the mall, a try!!
So happy we did!!

Read moreI didn't know it was possible to receive customer service this bad at a donut shop. I've been to the east Vancouver location many times but today was my first time visiting this location and LAST time visiting any Angel's location. Long story, apologies in advance. So the young lady that took my debit card for payment and a young man named Paul that identified himself as the owner had some kind of issue that resulted in charging me three times for my transaction. They ran my debit card once and clearly received approval but for some reason couldn't get a receipt to print so they insisted they needed to run it again. I told them I was uncomfortable with it because I had just watched them run my card successfully but the owner insisted so I let them run it again rather than just leave my order behind. Within ten minutes of getting home I have not one but three charges on my debit card for the transaction, when I call the "owner" refuses to give me an email address I can send a screenshot to and insists I come back in with a printout instead. When I come down they refuse to issue me a refund because the 3, again THREE, separate charges are still pending. At this point I'm visibly very frustrated but not yelling or cussing, i try to communicate why I'm frustrated and the employees/owner just talk over me, shake their heads at me and act like I'm a complete monster for being frustrated. Overall it was just incredibly unprofessional, I don't even really care about the $32 extra dollars but I certainly don't appreciate the absolutely terrible service I received from the owner all the way down. In a time where so many good businesses have gone under it's a bummer that places like this get the privilege of continuing to exist. Spend your money literally anywhere else, you're better off getting your donuts from your corner gas station...
