I first came here a few months and the pho and bahn mi my husband and I shared was very good. Which is why when I had family visiting from California I decided to take them here. However both the service and quality of food was terrible. Things that went wrong: I ordered a pho bowl with no fatty brisket, soft tendon or tripe. What I received had all of those meat items. So I asked our server to remake them. I was trying to tell her what was wrong with the order but she kept interrupting me. She was upset and when I handed her the bowl she actually scratched me. The remade order actually was evidently the same one I had given her because it again had fatty brisket, soft tendon or tripe. I had to pick it all out. I had to place a big to go order but because our server never came back I had to go to the front to place it. After we were done eating we were waiting for about 10-15 minutes to get the take out order. But again no one came to check on us. I stood up and asked how much longer for the take out. Only for them to tell me it had already been done. I have no idea why they would let an order get cold and not inform the customer. Especially since they knew we were done eating and had already paid. They were hosting a big party and the music was very loud. I kept smelling weed that seemed to stem from the room where they were hosting the party. The meat in the pho was very dry and tough
This was a very negative experience in so many ways and I would not recommend this...
Read moreRecently I’ve been having a lot of Pho. Searching for that elusive grail like a lost Culinary Knight. Vancouver may be a backwater in a lot of ways, but it has some great Pho. Unfortunately Pho House Cafe was the most disappointing of the various places I’ve tried so far. The service was nice, the atmosphere was welcoming, but the first think I noticed was there was no lime on the condiment tray and there was about half the basil I usually receive with an order. Then came the first big problem. The broth was not very hot. I have never received a bowl of Pho that was not piping hot. Ever. For one thing, it means you cannot finish the bowl before it is cold, but more importantly it means that when you add the basil, it will not disseminate into the broth properly. And it needed something. The broth was bland and uninspiring. No bite, no complexity, no depth. Life is born of magic spices, star anis and coriander, with layers of history and culture and I simply didn’t get any of that. I also had the chicken salad rolls which was probably a mistake. I’d never had a roll with chicken and I thought it sounded interesting. It felt a little oily and the peanut dipping sauce was also a little boring. There are so many great Pho places in town, Pho House needs to step up its game and get back to its cultural roots. Good Pho satisfies the soul, this just...
Read moreI've come twice, and both times, I experienced a discrepancy in their menu. Please, get it together.
Their salad roll was very lacking. As pictured, there was barely any filling, mostly just lettuce.
I ordered the S6 banh mi and it was supposed to be fried pork. The picture in the front of the restaurant showed actual pork but what was provided was fried Vietnamese Pork ham. Irritating. It was essentially S5. I asked the guy that works there and said they changed it up. Why put picture menus on the front of the store like it's a counter service restaurant? I felt scammed.
On my second visit, I wanted the S17. I noticed this on the menu the first time I came so this was my whole purpose of the 2nd visit. It's the Vietnamese skillet breakfast with pate and baguette. Turns out they don't serve it anymore. CHANGE THE MENU THEN.
Aside from the annoying experience, their pho broth is good.
They say 3rd times a charm, so maybe my next visit will be better, but I won't hold my breath. If I told you that you had a 66% chance of being irritated, would...
