Discrimination, I wanted this to be the very first word for this review. I gave this restaurant a second shot today. Let me start off with my FIRST experience. Two days ago my GM and I were close to "Yamas Sushi". Around lunch time , we decided that we were in the mood for sushi. Yamas restaurant was near by and we entered the establishment. As soon as we entered, we automatically; saw a difference between us and the other guests. The other guest were received with a warm welcoming. Us on the other hand were just ordered to sit down and before we could sit down. Our server in quotes suggested "there's a Chinese place right next door." "Are you sure you want to eat here?" She also kept insisting that we were in the wrong place by stating "This is an all Japanese cuisine." We were really uncomfortable but didn't pay much mind and ordered our food. After we had ordered everything was pretty much tense. With the sushi staff looking at us and the server really not doing her job. We left and we still tipped the server because that's her job. Although she didn't do , not even near a good job. We still left a tip for attending us. I'm not finished here this is only our FIRST experience.
Today at around 2pm we decided that the plaza was closest to us. With an optimistic, positive view of things, decided to give it one last shot. However we were very wrong. We were treated the same way and even worse. At the end of our meal and after we had finished and payed (not to mention the tip we left). I went to the bathroom to wash my hands but before that. I was walking towards the bathroom and from a distance, I caught an older gentlemen, giving me a very dirty look. After I used the bathroom, to my surprise I see my GM and the same individual at the front entrance. As soon as I walk towards the door the person with my GM told me that I could not eat in his restaurant because WE looked "DIRTY." To my surprise it was the manager on duty. His name is BOB. Bob then told my GM that we looked very filthy and that he pointed out that he did not have a dress code policy for his establishment but we could not eat inside looking like BUMS. Not only did he make those very rude and unnecessary comments but he took his hand and touched me wanting to escort me out his sushi bar. Here's the catch, I had just bought brand new pants a day prior AND I had a brand new shirt and sweater on. That's what bothers me the most I was in clean clothes and in brand new ones as well. I believe I was descrimated today simply because I am latino. I do not suggest anyone of color to walk into the establishment because IT WILL BE a VERY AWFUL, UNFORGETTABLE experience.
I have been living in NOVA all of my life and never have felt so disgusted and disrespected ever in my life. I am also a former Applbee's server and host. I have a pretty good understanding in food business. Never in my life would I ever treat a guest the way that I was treated today. Not because of there clothes and wouldn't even bother to look at their skin color. I just want to end this review but letting the public know.
If you want to walk inside a sushi bar, have horrible customer service AND be discriminated all at once.
Yamas sushi is the place to go, now I'm saying this in all seriousness. Only because I LIVED IT TWICE.
Google needs a -5 star option because this an experience that I will never...
Read moreThis review was written by my 10 year old daughter who loves this place, I think it's the best review I have ever read:
Do you need a place to dine fine, fine, fine? From the food to the atmosphere Sushi Yama is just right for you. And each one you order arrives not dropped, popped, or stopped. And the decoration makes Disney look bad, and not just one of the parks, all of the parks combined. Go on and head to Sushi Yama, if you're prepared for something so good you will fall in love with it once you’re full.
From Rainbow rolls to Dragon rolls, I don’t think anyone can make this food better than Sushi Yama. The food at sushi yama is amazing. If you like sushi or not, you’re gonna want this food every day. They have sushi, salads, drinks, noodles and more stuff that make me hungry after a big lunch. Are you thinking about eating Sushi Yama for dinner? Well I am!
The staff at Sushi Yama are welcoming as a willow, polite as a peacock, calm as a kitten. The staff at Sushi Yama can make Gordon Ramsay look bad! They are kind, lightning fast, hardest workers ever, and always on track. Have you seen the amount of work the chef's put into every single little rice grain in the sushi? And even better, the sushi comes out as perfect as a golden marshmallow.
Do you like eating in a comfy, clean, authentic, environment? Even when it's crowded or cool, the atmosphere in Sushi Yama is always going to be an A+ in my subject. When any type of person walks in, they’ll know what I'm talking about. It’s inviting and the lighting can make a baby fall asleep on the spot. Come to think of it, it can make a grown man fall asleep on the spot. Don’t be shy and head over to Sushi Yama for the time of your life!
Sushi Yama is the right place for any occasion. Birthdays, new years, anything! There are cool and exotic choices, the decoration is one of a kind, and the staff are the best around. Just head over to Vienna, Virginia and you’ll get to have the best sushi to ever touch the...
Read moreI tried Yama for the first time yesterday after a friend recommended it-- it did not disappoint. We went for the sushi. My initial thought when I saw the menu was that it was a little overpriced, but after seeing and tasting the quality of the sushi, I think the prices are fair. The menu has a good variety and creativity when it comes to the special rolls. The ingredients were very fresh-tasting and everything was presented beautifully, which also surprised me considering that the restaurant was pretty busy. Sometimes food is thrown together quickly when a place starts to fill up, but this was not the case at Yama. We had a large order (group of five) and we were served our food about 30 minutes after placing our order.
Food wise, I would give this place five stars but there were just two things I think could have been better. As I mentioned before, we were a group of five and the waitress only gave us one menu for the entire table, so it was a little inconvenient having to take turns trying to read through everything. This was before the dinner rush had really started, so I wish she had put at least one extra menu one the table for us. Additionally the restaurant seemed just slightly dingy due to a lot of easy little fix-its around the restaurant. For example, a lot of ceiling tiles above our table had big water stains.. the front entrance had different piles of fliers and ordering menus, etc. None of this is a huge deal and didn't affect our meal by any means, but they are easy fixes to have the place looking a little nicer. It's nothing that would keep me from returning-- I actually can't...
