Exorbitantly Over Priced and Overrated.
I don't normally write reviews, but this place was so exceptionally disappointing and makes me question the tastes of those who recommended it so highly. I'll try to keep this concise, but the wound to our wallet and mood is still very fresh.
We had a 6:30 reservation in advance, but were told the table was still finishing desert and talking. They waited an HOUR before giving us an alternative table.
The soup, which was way too salty and generally sad, took another half hour.
All of this time sitting and waiting gave me a good chance to enjoy all of the insanely over priced art canvas prints (not originals, PRINTS, from what I could see) smattered on the walls like your parents fridge. None of it was very consistent, and none of it created much of a vibe. The decor in general feels like a sort of half assed reproduction of my college art gallery. Made worse by price tags under many of the prints (so tasteful). IT IS GOOD to support local artists - big kudos there - but either keep it consistent, or keep it in the front only. It feels like they rolled a dice to choose carpets, paint, and furniture then stapled it all together and dimmed the lights so you wouldn't notice. There is little to no visual direction, theming, or atmosphere. At least the food makes up for it, right? (spoilers, it actually makes it worse).
The food was the nail in the coffin. We had sat for almost 1.5 hours before finally getting what seemed like an easy order; steaks, fries, and scallop/shrimp grits. Only 5 plates. I cannot believe the NERVE of this place to serve such mediocre food for those prices. Two steaks were overcooked and used too much spice, which to me says you're using lower grades or are too lazy to do a decent sear / grill. A good steak, cooked properly, can SPEAK FOR ITSELF with very few additions, that's not even a question of taste that's just common sense ESPECIALLY at those prices.
As for the grits? They tasted fine, the grits were good, creamy, with nice flavor, it's amazing what butter can achieve. But don't think they get off scot-free - no. That dish cost FORTY FIVE DOLLARS. I even thought to myself, man that's a little pricey for grits but this place is fancy, when in Rome right? FORTY FIVE DOLLARS gets you some lovely grits, and TWO SCALLOPS... SCALLOPS ARE LIKE, $30/lb and there's like 20 SCALLOPS in a pound (maybe more), so what, $1.50 per scallop at market, that means you get $3.00 worth of scallops in your FORTY FIVE DOLLAR grits. They took the other $42 and bought bath salts to come up with that number.
Once again I cannot believe the NERVE of this place to peg itself as a "delightful culinary experience", then proudly serve you two scallops, overcooked steak, and soup-du-sadness. This was supposed to be a celebratory, awesome dinner that we had been looking forward to. The only delight was leaving.
FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH:
It has a really really nice little marketplace, this review is for the restaurant. The sushi was great, fish was fresh, rice was good sushi rice, assembly and presentation were great. They have a nice wine list. The waitress offered to recook the steak, but at that point we just wanted to go home. It was almost 9pm. The manager asked if the food was good and we didn't fully go over all of these issues. Once again, we wanted to go home. He offered a free dessert, again we didn't tell him all the issues so I don't blame him for not doing more. But even then, him potentially fixing our dinner wouldn't have changed these critiques. It IS GOOD to support local artists, absolutely. But either way A. Keep it consistent, or B. Relegate it to the front of house or marketplace, not on every wall of the restaurant.
Thanks for coming to...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to try this restaurant out for our wedding anniversary and it was greatly underwhelming. We got there a little early to have a drink or two before dinner, so we headed outside to the bar where we were told it was first come first serve. We mentioned that we were waiting on a table to another waitress nearby and sat down. The bartender was clearly agitated and asked us again if we were waiting on a table. We said yes and ordered drinks. Shortly after that, we could clearly overhear the bartender complaining to another server that they were allowing people to come to the bar that were waiting to dine and that “he had to make money too.” So right off the bat it was made very unwelcoming and awkward. A few minutes later we could hear him saying something about it again and throwing his hands toward us.
We got sat at our table. We had a nice waitress who was very attentive. We ordered more drinks and an appetizer. The appetizer came out without any additional plates served. Shortly after we began eating, the server brought two small plates. Then our salads came out which were highly disappointing to say the least. The house salad was made with arugula that looked like it came from a bag with a couple of sliced cherry tomatoes and that was it. The Caesar salad didn’t have enough drsssing and the anchovies that we were told would be on the salad were miniature. The main course came out and the food was good, but much like the appetizer, the food was dropped off without any steak knives so the server had to follow behind with the knives after we’d already started eating.
Before I move on the dessert, I want to mention specifically that the original fork and butter knife we started with was used for every meal. The silverware was removed by the server when bussing the plates rather than bringing new silverware, or having a couple of forks to use through the meal. This is not the biggest deal, but noteworthy to how this is being marketed as a high end steakhouse and for the money we spent, the experience and little details really make the difference. We could have gotten a better experience at Longhorn.
Finally, the dessert was almost laughable as to how small it was. A $15 piece of cheesecake came out and was no bigger than a slice of a mini sampler cheesecake that you’d buy from Walmart. I would be embarrassed to serve this to my guests as a restaurant owner and charge the amount of money they are charging.
All in all… the food and service (aside from the bartender and dessert) was pretty good. If they’d been a little more professional, added some simple toppings to their salad (cheese, croutons, onions), and payed attention to some of the important details of a typical high end dining experience- like forks and plates before your food comes, I would not have been so critical. I don’t think we will be back, but hopefully they take this critique seriously and make some changes. We’d love to have a high end steakhouse to go to on special...
Read moreOh boy. Tonight was interesting.
Starting out. Walked in and the hostess didn't even look at us for 5 minutes while she was on the phone. I understand she was doing her job, but maybe have someone else answer the phones if you're only going to have one person cover your entire front of house.
We're seated. 10 minutes later the hostess brings us water. The water is not fit for human consumption. The ice is even worse and likely the real cause of problem.
The menues we were given were absolutely disgusting. Bits of food crusted on every page, the binders were greassy.
After being seated for 25 minutes we get our glass of wine and moctail. Both were good.
After more than an hour we get our appetizer. The sliders with a side of truffle pommes and a ala carte demi glaze. This was the best part of our meal by far. Luckily we both really enjoy extremely rare meat, I'm not sure my partner actually realized how rare they were, we still enjoyed them.
Our silverware that was on our appetizer plates was removed. They returned us unwrapped silverware and set it right down on the bare table. That's gross.
We ordered the Crispy Salmon and the Duck confit with risotto. After being here for nearly 2.5 hours we got our entrees. My duck was good. The risotto was absolutely inedible. Raw rice with a thick sauce to bind it. Not real risotto at all. I sent it back and told them I wasn't interested anymore. They supposedly "remade" it. What they returned to me had an odd sponge like texture and was extremely glutinous. I'm almost positive they just microwaved the heck out of it.
My partner said that she liked her Salmon but ate almost none of it. I tried it and it was the most fishy tasting Salmon I have ever eaten. This is coming from a guy who eats Spanish mackerel Sashimi weekly. Salmon should not tatse like that.
The charred broccoli on both of our plates tasted as if it had been doused in lighter fluid and charred on a dirty grill. I've never had broccoli that was inedible.
Onto the actual service. We sat outside which almost always a gamble. Our fault again I suppose. Our server was very nice and did a good job telling us about the one special for the night. Lamb curry soup. After that we hardly ever saw her again. We could tell it wasn't it fault really either. Everytime we looked for her she was running herself ragged inside. The baffling part is while we watched her run around basically running the floor, there were as many as 6 people just standing around in the kitchen.
One the managers was extremely rude. I did not even bother with his name. He needs to find a new line of employment.
Lindsey, the other manager was extremely professional and very apologetic. We will give it another go at some point simply because of her professionalism.
These folks really need some work. It's a beautiful location with every reason in the world to succeed. They aren't doing it at the moment...
