Great Mexican Restaurant - Found this place on G-Maps, saw 4.3 stars, traffic was bad on I-95 South, so I took a chance - glad I did, what a surprise! At first glance this place might scare away timid Gringos who have never been to Mexico or are afraid of the unknown; it’s a restaurant in an old house with a dirt parking lot in the back. If you know good Mexican food, then you must give it a shot. Our server was very friendly and she thoroughly explained the differences and variations of the menu items. I shared plates with a friend; red sauce/beef enchiladas and steak taquitos. The red enchiladas were awesome, simple, corn tortillas, spicier than what you would expect; the waitress told us the green enchiladas were even more spicy. The taquitos were very well made, great flavor and very satisfying. Both plates had fresh toppings and nice presentation. My son had the chicken quesadilla (shredded chicken), and it was good. Next time I will try one of their meat dishes, maybe one of the soups. Refried beans were excellent unlike most Mexican places where I live in Hampton Roads. The salsa and chips were just so-so, this could be improved. This is not your typical Mexican chain restaurant where you get piles of bland sustenance; at Almitas you get really good, flavorful Mexican food in portions that will leave you content. Highly recommended, we...
Read moreCame here for dinner around 7:30 on a Saturday night because of the good reviews. My first impression was that the music was too loud. There were only about 5 tables and they were all large (6-8 top) and pushed up against the wall. Only one was occupied, which should have been a sign. We were told to pick a table and the server pulled it away from the wall so we could sit down. We were given salsa that was clear and without flavor (but spicy) and chips that didn't seem fresh. My water came in a small glass that I had to ask to be refilled and the Coke was poured from a can. I had a craving for chimichangas, which they apparently took off the menu, but they said they would make them anyway. When asked if we could have them fried, the server looked confused and said no. So I got fajitas instead, which consisted of large flat pieces of chicken, a few little slices of green pepper, and onions, all with very little flavor. I also had to ask for tortillas and wasn't given the usual extra plate so I had to build my fajitas on the scrap of tin foil they were wrapped in. My boyfriend's chimichanga was full of beans and rice (with green beans & carrots) that wasn't worth finishing. At least it was cheap, but we left...
Read moreWe loved this place the first time we came here, so we thought to try it again.
We stopped by at 4:00 pm for some food and a margarita, but we found the front door ajar and all of the lights off. We checked to see that all three of the neon “OPEN” signs were illuminated, so we entered the restaurant to see that no one was there. There was tip money lying out on the register with no sign of employees and the place was empty. We both called out to see if anyone was in the building, but did not receive a response. We ended up waiting outside for a few minutes and even called the restaurant with no response. Strange to say the least…
We met the owner the last time we stopped by and thoroughly enjoyed our visit, but to find a neglected restaurant with no one attending the business was a bit disconcerting. The owner needs to ensure this type of scenario does not occur too often as thieves could have easily had a field day with money,...
