We mostly like the food here, and the staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. But DO NOT get kung pao chicken here. It is not good. I’ve gotten it twice (stupid me), and about the only resemblance to kung pao is that it has peanuts in it. Otherwise, it is made up of diced, breaded and fried chicken, stir fried in a sugary sweet sauce. There’re no vegetables and no spicy flavor at all. You could say it taste’s a little like General Tso’s Chicken because of the sweetness, but even General Tso’s has a spicy component to it. This is just sugary. I’m kind of wondering if the front-of-the-house staff is even aware of what the kitchen is putting out as kung pao chicken. I might ask about it next time I’m in there. But as I said, I really like everything else I’ve had there. Another funny thing is, you might have noticed that egg foo young isn’t on the menu. I asked about this, and the young lady I spoke to said their cooks don’t like making it (she didn’t say why), but they will if a customer asks for it. I got it once, and it was good! So I don’t know what...
Read moreIt's mostly carry out now due to difficulty staffing, sadly like so many restaurants. You are welcome to order food at the counter and eat in the restaurant, though. Every time I try something different, I find a new favorite dish. The food is delicious! Service is friendly and helpful. Ask if they have the "Chinese hush puppies" which are amazing! But you'll want to go early as the often run out of this popular "off menu" treat. The coconut shrimp is so good! Honestly, I haven't had anything I haven't loved, here. Our go-to for Chinese! UPDATE: Still my FAVORITE for Chinese food. Hot and sour soup is divine! I highly recommend Dragon and Phoenix! Edit to add: Tonight (1/15/24) we ate in and the food was amazing. The fried tofu with mixed vegetables was spicy and perfectly cooked. The green beans were crispy, the tofu was crispy outside and soft...
Read moreThis was now our third time dining at Hong Kong Restaurant and I can say confidently that I have found our go-to Chinese restaurant. All three times we've ordered take out the food has been ready, it has been correct, and it has been delicious. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in the Wake Forest area but this is by far my favorite.
What really sets it apart from the others are the portion sizes. Other restaurants do half rice half chicken when you order something like General Tso and while good, feels like a cheat. Hong Kong Restaurant does a full container of chicken and rice on the side. This alone gives it a win in my book not even considering the good customer service, the comparable prices, and the reliability.
