Tanoshi Japanese Bistro — Restaurant in Walnut Creek

This place opened a few months ago. Although my wife and I passed by it on a regular basis since our gym is close by, we dismissed it as just another "Japanese Bistro." We finally decided to grab lunch one day after observing how busy they constantly were. The place was clean, getting seated to our table was quick and the staff very friendly. Glasses of water were placed on our table before asking. I had the teriyaki chicken and tempura, my wife that the salmon teriyaki, and we ordered a side of dragon roll. Our food came fairly quickly, considering how busy they were. The food was excellent! The price was very reasonable as well. Since our first visit, we have been here multiple times then and we have ordered different dishes from the menu. Tanoshi does not disappoint. We have recommended this place to our neighbors. We ordered the okonomiyaki which was our favorite. I highly recommend it! The red dress was good but we thought the tuna on top was light. The fish katsu was not what I expected. Reminded me of fish and chips since it had a drizzle of tartar sauce but it was perfectly flakey and moist. The mixed tempura was lightly buttered just the way I like it. We also ordered the uni pasta which was disappointing. Do not order this. The pasta was dry, not al dente and the noodles were breaking apart. The uni was maybe 4 tiny pieces topped with ikura. It was really sad.

had the combo for lunch and dinner, so I tried spicy beef, sashimi, tempura and spicy roll. The food was exceptionally good, fresh, healthy and plenty. With the combo you get the classic Miso soup and salad, but also fantastic pickled ginger, a nice twist. I had green tea as a beverage instead of water, delicious, and you get free refills. The atmosphere in the restaurant feels very classy with piano music in the background and modern sleek design. I found the TVs a bit irritating the first time, but was able to ignore them the second time. I sat in a booth as well as at a table for 2 and had a great experience at both. It is reasonably priced. It think this will be my new neighborhood lunch venue....
