I've been to the bookstore dozens of times, and each time I purchase a book, or a magnet, or a set of cards. Today I decided to sit down and read at All Day after buying a book I couldn't wait to dive into.
The book was everything I'd imagined, but after turning about ten pages I realized that I didn't even have a glass of water. The service today was awful. After almost thirty minutes I was greeted by one server, never to be seen again, who I ordered an iced coffee from. He was nice.
A mere 15 minutes later, I was approached by another server, and she asked me what else I'd like. At this point I hadn't decided and asked for another two minutes. Well, those two minutes turned into another 20 minutes and eventually I had to stand up and approach my original server, who was now behind the bar pouring draft beers for other guests, and tell him what I wanted to eat.
The beverage came quickly enough, but the food took an additional 30 minutes and it was barely hot. I actually touched the food to check. I ordered the chicken wrap, without bacon or tomatoes, and the cheese was still intact--a specimen of microwaved dishes that are sold to unsuspecting consumers as original.
I started eating my little wrap, taking bites between reading a paragraph or two and listening to the nice Colombian lady teach the American Spanish. Then my boyfriend saw it crawl behind me. A freaking roach. The little bugger wasn't large or flying around, but he was a roach in a restaurant, and immediately my mind went to the kitchen, where there were probably even more roaches breeding in the spilled grease of their tiled floor.
Don't eat here. The staff actually saw me throw my napkin on my plate at the site of this diseased insect and ask for the check. I waited. No one came. Fifteen minutes later, the girl I'd originally asked showed up with the check. No discount. No comp. No nothing. Just an "i'm sorry" and a smile.
My boyfriend paid the tab, and I advocated for not tipping. He never tips so he was cool with that, and I can honestly say that it's the only time I've ever left $0 tip. It wasn't just the roach. It was the terrible service and attention to customers. Every time I glanced up from my book to ponder an argument or phrase in my book, there was someone standing by the door in anger waiting to be seated. Is this what America has become? $60 for roach-adjacent dining? Disgusting.
Like I said... I love the bookstore, but perhaps skip the restaurant. As someone who comes from a family of service-industry folks, this was not only a waste of my money, but also a waste of a good...
ย ย ย Read moreThe other day, I had a friend in town from Alabama and he was staying at a hotel in the Dupont area of NW DC. Dupont is a nostalgic area for me because I lived in that area for about 12 years before moving to Rockville, MD. Dupont has and is the most diverse area for restaurants in the DC area so we chose Kramer's because it was convenient AND because of our previous visit when he was in town. Last year when my friend was in town, the weather was in our favor and we enjoyed dinner outside. This time, it was rainy, dark and gloomy, and we were unable to enjoy sitting outside.
Moreover, my friend arrived much sooner than I, but was able to be seated right away. When I arrived, and joined my friend, a friendly waiter by the name of "Alli" stopped by to greet us and wait on us. Alli was very informed of the Kramer's menu, friendly, and personable. Of course, like most restaurant waiters, they like to ask about our drinks at the top and because it was a cold rainy day, I figured I would have something warm, so I requested an Irish Coffee. Alli, gave me the empathic look and told me that the restaurant had just run out of coffee. However, he suggested (Because he figured out that my drink needed to be warm) a warm cider (with a shot of course). I thought, look at Alli, trying to be proactively great! Haaa! Well, I said, why not! Alli gave me a quick-charming smile and then returned to his professionalism. I could tell that he was great with people or that he maybe an entertainer. I asked him and he stated that he was in school for Musical Theater, and had just moved to the area. Ahh, that's when the sun finally came out. Haaa!
Well, because me and my friend were meeting up to catch up, (had so much to talk about...) we didn't want to eat anything heavy. Moreover, we were pleased to find that the menu had an all day breakfast section. Therefore, this made our decision much easier. Surprisingly, we decided to have the same thing and ordered the Soho Omelet: spinach, swiss cheese, breakfast potatoes, toast, choice of meat. Alli asked both of us, what type of protein would we like as opposed to saying "meat." I thought that was cute and different.
Overall, it was great to find a venue that not only served great food, but also gave...
